Why Do the Heathen Rage?

The political season is heating up and the soundbites are flowing. It is obvious that politicians who have stood for at least some degree of God's law, will quickly abandon these positions, when the latest poll tells them that it is expediant to do so. I believe a look at Psalms 2 is in order.

Psalms 2:11 ¶ Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

Psalm 2 is generally believed to have been written by David, probably when he wassurrounded by hostile forces who were allied together to keep him from taking the throne at Jerusalem. We know that David was a type of Christ and that the throne of Jerusalem typifies and denotes the reign of God over this earth. We may rest assured that just as David was victorious over his enemies and ascended the throne at Jerusalem, the Lord Jesus Christ is sitting on the throne of heaven and in spite of His enemies, His kingdom will be fully established in His own good time.

Meanwhile: Why do the heathen rage and what is the vain thing that people imagine? We find the answer in the Words of Jesus in John 15:18-16:4. To paraphrase: Jesus was hated because He convicted the people of their sin. Those who follow Him will also be hated. We are not immune from persecution; it will come! It is interesting to note that in the middle of this discourse, Jesus reminds us of the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, which He said would testify of Himself. (We need the Holy Ghost! It is the Spirit that testifies of Jesus. It is the Spirit that brings to remembrance His commandments. It is the Spirit that compares His Words with those of the adversary. Without the abiding presence of the Holy Ghost, we will be easily deceived.)

Jesus said they would cast us out of the synagogue even kill us, thinking that they were doing God's will. He said they would do this because,

John 16:3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

It is an interesting insight that when asked to quote his favorite bible verse, one of our presidential candidates said, "John 16:3."

Are you aware of the newly formed United Religions, a parallel organization, to the United Nations (but that's another subject). They may be religious, but don't mention the Name of Jesus),

Psalms 2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

Yes, the rulers have taken counsel together. They are determined to throw off the yoke of Almighty God. Their are concerted efforts to throw off God's law, in the matter of so-called gay rights and abortion on demand, just to name two. California will soon vote in a referendum concerning the definition of marriage. The referendum was entitled Defense of Marriage Act. One bureaucrat arbitrarily renamed it the Limitations of Marriage Act. Perhaps the following which was forwarded to About-Him explains the current anti-God climate better.

When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard:

"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good',but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We confess that. We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism; We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism; We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle; We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery; We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare; We have killed our unborn and called it choice; We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable; We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem; We have abused power and called it politics; We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition; We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression; We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent to direct us to the center of Your will, to open ask it in the name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen"

The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest.

If we wonder why some of these people are so venomous, perhaps the Lord Himself simply has them all stirred up.

Psalms 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

The Lord does have them in derision and will let them vent the full extent of their anger,However, He will speak to them in His wrath. God is loving and patient, hoping that we all repent. He is not willing that any perish but that all come to the knowledge of the truth (Jn 3:15-18). The apostle Paul told us to behold both the goodness and severity of God (Romans 11:22).

Psalms 2:5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

The prophet Daniel saw Jesus tearing down this world's kingdoms. They may be arrayed against the Lord's Messiah, but their kingdoms are coming down! They may seek to disavow the law of God, but God is only laughing. He has them in derision. Soon He will say, "enough," and then His wrath will be poured out.

Daniel 2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

Daniel 2:45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

Jesus, declared to be "The Son of God with power," by His resurrection from the dead, is on the throne of heaven. He ever lives and intercedes for us (He is asking for the heathen as an inheritance).

Psalms 2:7 ¶ I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

He will receive the earth as His inheritance.

Revelation 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

His judgement will be exercised.

Psalms 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieceslike a potter's vessel.

I Thessalonians 1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

So what do we do? What advice do we give our leaders and politicians?"Be wise and be instructed."

Psalms 2:10 ¶ Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

As the last phrase of the text says, "Blessed are all they that put their trust in him." We could say blessed are they who instead of putting their trust in the governments of this world simply say, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done."

Luke 11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

His kingdom is established and will be extended. I don't believe that Jesus will revealHimself as a card carrying member of the Republican party. Neither will He deal kindly with any party, group or people who in the name of humanity: Rewrite His law, Deny the mention of His name. Kill the unborn and agitate like the men of Sodom, for what is repugnant to Him. He also has judgement reserved for those reap riches to themselves while oppressing the poor (James 5). So I don't look to any political party to be my savior, because they all have elements that are oppossed to God's law.

We need to do all that is possible to influence our leaders to "Be instructed of Him," but we had better be praying, "Thy Kingdom come."
