The Word of God

The bible was written by 40 Writers over a period of 1500 years. Some of the writers, such as Paul were highly educated. Others such as Amos were uneducated.The Old Testament, which the writers of the New Testament referred to as Scripture was inspired by God, or God-breathed.

II Timothy 3:16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

II Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of Godspake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.

Jesus gave His stamp of approval to the scripture.
He simply stated that the purpose of scripture was to tell of Him.

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they arethey which testify of me.

The Word confronts us with these questions. Who is Jesus? What does His death on a cross have to do with me? The Word declares me a sinner awaiting damation.The Word says that when my understanding is opened to the fact of who Jesus is and that I am a sinner alienated from Him, I must repent.

Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These [are] the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and [in] the prophets, and [in] the psalms, concerning me.
45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among allnations, beginning at Jerusalem.

The New Testament was written by those who had walked with Christ, had wittnessed His resurrection, or as Paul had had a supernatural personal encounter with Him.

II Peter 1:16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

The death and resurrection of Christ, which is the main theme of the New Testament, had many witnesses. First the original 12 apostles whohad such dramatic conversions that they willingly laid down their lives for the gospel. Second the 500 who Jesus spoke to at or just prior to His ascension. There is a highly educated man named JosH McDowell who set out to prove on a methodical basis that the resurrection was a myth. When he was confronted with the facts of these eyewitnesses he was converted to Christianity. I highly recommend his book Evidence That Demands a Verdict.

John gave the purpose of his gospel.

John 20:31-AV But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son ofGod; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

In Matthew 7:21-27 we find the parable of the Wise and Foolish Housebuilders.Here Jesus states emphatically that we must obey His Word to enter His kingdom and go to heaven.

Matthew 7:21. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

It would be good to read and re-read The parable of the Sower in Luke 8:5-8. Jesuscompares His Word to seed planted in the ground.

In Luke 8:11-15 Jesus shows the things that choke the Word and keep it from growing to fruition.

Luke 8:12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
13 They on the rock [are they], which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and thesehave no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of [this] life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep [it], and bring forth fruit with patience.

The Word of God is a Living Entity, not just printed words on a paper.
The Word is ever active fulfilling His purpose.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life.

The Word is eternal!

Luke 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

We are perfected by the Word.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

The Word will keep us evil in evil days, when some will depart from the faith, and prefer deceit over the Word of God.

2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

1 Timothy 4:1. Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

Isaiah 30:10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

We stand as an example of the believer, with the Word. We keep the Word while we wait for the appearing of Jesus.

1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

Timothy 6:14 That thou keep [this] commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

The ultimate purpose of the Word is our salvation.

Romans 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, [even] in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
