Faith

Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him forrighteousness (Ro 4.3; Ja 2:3).

A very simple yet profound statement. Seemingly a God so infinitely separated from me by His holiness would base my hope of salvation on performance and merit.He did not do this, He based my salvation on one simple premise.Do I believe His word, which gives the record of His Son, or don't I?

John speaking of his own writing, said.

I Jn. 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to useternal life, and this life is in his Son.

John stated that the purpose of his writings was that we might believe:

I Jn. 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

John stated that the basis of what he wrote, was that he had been an eyewitness. He is joined in this by Peter who declared that they had not followed some cunningly devised fable, but had seen the majesty of the Lord.

1 John 1:1. That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have lookedupon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen [it], andbear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which waswith the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship [is] with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1:16. For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

Jesus, speaking to Martha at the death of her brother put it all in perspective, by stating in effect that the only thing we can carry into eternity is our belief in him as Savior. He then ask Martha very emphatically if she believed Him.

John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, andthe life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yetshall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall neverdie. Believest thou this?

While we rely on the word of eyewitnesses such as Johnand Peter for a basis of faith, that is not the only reasonThat we believe. Faith is a gift from God.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; andthat not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:

Jesus had volunteered the sight of his nailed scarred hands to the disciples hidden behind closed doors. Their believing was based on sight. Thomas who was absent was actually offered a gift of faith, and a chance to excel, when the others told him they had seen the Lord. Jesus told him it was more blessed to believe without seeing first. This can only be accomplished by faith being given as an act of God's grace. We must have faith to please God, we must believe that He exist, that he rewards those who diligently seek Him. What we believe, and on what our faith is based is extremely important. Most of all we must have faith in His work on the cross.

ICor. 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them thatperish foolishness; but unto us which are saved, it is thepower of God.

Our faith and profession, is based on a person, Jesus the Son of God. He is simply God manifest in flesh.

Hebrews 3:1. Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of [our] faith without wavering; (for He [is] faithful that promised;)

What we believe is very important, it can be the difference between heaven and hell. These things we profess:That Jesus was born of a virgin, the Son of God, and that when we believe, His life is imparted to us.

John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe thatJesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing yemight have life through his name.

That He was manifested to take away sin.

John 1:29. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, andsaith, behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin ofthe world.

That He bore the penalty for sin.

Isaiah 53:5 But he [was] wounded for our transgressions, [hewas] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of ourpeace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

We believe that He became a partaker of flesh and bloodTo destroy the devil, and that he is presently in the role ofA High Priest, at the throne of God.

Hebrews 2:14. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same;that through death he might destroy him that had the powerof death, that is, the devil;
15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
16 For verily he took not on [him the nature of] angels; but he took on [him] the seed of Abraham.
17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto [his] brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things [pertaining] to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

We believe that He lives in us by his Spirit, and thatwe can be overcomers in this present world, because we diedout to sin when we repented, and buried the old man with allof his deeds in the waters of baptism, and we rose to walk innewness of life, which is His Life being lived through us,the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless Ilive; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life whichI now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son ofGod, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

We believe that His Spirit is a living, flowing,vibrant, force in our life. His spirit, the Holy Spiritsatisfied a hunger and thrist in our life that could besatisfied in no other way. Because we have drunk of thisspiritual water, we'll never be thristy again.

John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shallgive him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall givehim shall be in him a well of water springing up intoeverlasting life.

John 7:37. In the last day, that great [day] of the feast,Jesus stood and cried, saying, if any man thirst, let himcome unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said,out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life:he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he thatbelieveth on me shall never thirst.

We have faith that He is coming again for those who havebelieved in His resurrection, the dead being resurrected, the living being caught up to meet him.

1 Thessalonians 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died androse again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will Godbring with him.
17 Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be caught uptogether with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Our faith tells us that we shall see Him, and be like Him!

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when heshall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him ashe is.

Because of this hope we purify ourselves, after the patternOf His purity.

I John 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

We are called upon because of our faith and professionIn the Lord Jesus Christ to wage warfare against the powersOf darkness, and to overcome the world by our faith.

I Tim.6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, [even] our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

The faith that God gives to me as a gift, is the faith that Jesus excerised while walking here on earth. A simple trusting faith in God, much like a small child. In fact he said that unless I become as a little child, I could not enter his kingdom. He likened the receiving of good gifts, and the Holy Spirit to a child asking his father for food with the utmost confidence that his request would be met. He told us that if we met a few simple conditions such as abiding in him, and his words in us, and asking according to his will in faith believing, we could move mountains, and have whatever petition we desire of him.

Because of our faith in who Jesus is, and what He has done for us, we commit our lives to him in this present world,knowing that at the day of judgment, we will not have believed in vain, but will be found faithful.

1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
