The First Miracle: Changing Water Into Wine -  John 2:1-11

John 2:11  This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

Immediately after choosing His first five disciples, Jesus returned to Galilee, where He and His disciples were invited to a wedding at Cana.  An embarrassing situation developed for the hosts of the wedding; they had run out of wine. Jewish weddings in that day ran for 6 or 7 days, and to have no wine was a major disgrace.   The mother of Jesus was there and she appealed to Jesus to do something.
Jesus tried to put her off by saying, "Mine hour is not yet come," but His mother would have none of it. She told the servants to do what ever Jesus commanded. Seeing six stone water pots nearby, Jesus ordered that they be filled to the brim with water. They then drew from the pots and took the liquid to the ruler of the feast. He marveled that the best wine had been saved till last. By this miracle, Jesus manifested His glory and His disciples believed on Him.

Conclusion: Jesus is the master of the impossible situation.  He cares and is willing to act in every aspect of your life. Much like the Syro- Phoenician woman who desired the crumbs from the Master's table (Matthew 15:25) and the persistent widow  who appealed to the unjust judge (Luke 18:3), Mary's faith overcame Jesus' reluctance to act.  Note also that Jesus made use of the resources at hand and the efforts of the servants in filling the pots. We can play a large part in seeing our impossible situation altered by doing the obvious and exercising faith to cover the impossible.

We will soon be the honored guests at another wedding feast called the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7-9). We are already drinking the New Wine of the Holy Ghost here (Acts 2:13-18), but just as the best wine was saved till last at Cana, who knows what awaits us there (1 Corinthians 2:9; 1 John 3:2)?

Humor
There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a great writer.

When asked to define "great" he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!"

He now works for Microsoft, writing error messages.
