About-Him Devotional 12-14-2002

3rd of a 4 part series on the prophesies of Jesus:

Isaiah 42:1 ¶ Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, [in whom] my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

Philippians 2:7  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Ezekiel 34:11  For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, [even] I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

John 10:11  I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

Isaiah saw our Lord coming as a humble servant.  He along with Ezekiel  and the Psalmists also saw Him as a tender shepherd.  As we reflect on the life of Christ we see how He fulfilled these prophesies perfectly.  He could have come to this world as a demanding King, but He humbled and emptied Himself and came in the role of a servant ( Philippians 2:7-8). He claimed His rightful role of Lord and Master and yet stooped to wash the feet of His disciples (John 13:14). He came to minister, rather than to be receive the ministry of others (Mark 10:45).

Jesus rightly claimed the title of The Good Shepherd ( Isaiah 40:11; Ezekiel 34:11,23; 37:24; Psalms 23:1). He stated His willingness to lay down His life for His sheep (John 10:11). He, like a shepherd, actively pursued His lost sheep until He found them and then gave them the necessary attention to sustain them (Isaiah 40:11).

What a lesson for us! If we plan on having a reward in heaven, we must do likewise. Jesus said that he who would be great had to be the servant of all.

Mark 9:35  And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

Humor

A woman pulled into a crowded parking lot and rolled down the car windows to make sure her Labrador retriever had fresh air. The dog was stretched out on the back seat, and she wanted to impress upon him that he must remain there. The women walked to the curb backward, pointing her finger at the car and saying emphatically, "Now you stay. Do you hear me? Stay!"

The driver of a nearby car gave me a startled look ...

"I don't know about you, lady," he said incredulously. "But I usually just put my car in park."
