About-Him Devotional 11-16-2002
2nd in a 3 part series on thankfulness: 1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks [be] to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. It is against my carnal nature to be thankful (Romans 8:7). However, my carnal nature does not rule my life (Galatians 5:16 ) because I am a new creature in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17 ) and have been made to be a partaker of His divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). I am grateful to the great eternal God who notes the sparrow (Matthew 10:29), feeds the raven (Luke 12:24) and clothes the lily of the field (Matthew (6:28). He even has the hairs of my head numbered (Luke 12:7) . I thank Him for the material things that He automatically provides, simply because He knows what I have need of (Luke 12:30), even before I ask (Isaiah 65:24). But most of all: I thank Him for His great gift of salvation. I thank Him for condescending and coming into this world as a Son over His own creation (Isaiah 9:6; Hebrews 3:6). I thank Him that when I, like the one lost sheep had strayed from the fold (Matthew 18:12-13) , He sought me out and bore me up in His arms (Isaiah 40:9-11). I thank Him that He washed me in His blood (Acts 20:28; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Revelation 1:5) and removed my sin from His sight (Psalms 103:12). I thank Him that He bore my sickness and infirmity on the cross of Calvary (Isaiah 53:1-12). I thank Him that He descended down to the pits of hell and delivered the captives (Ephesians 4:8), rendering Satan as a vanquished foe (Colossians 2:15), who can have no dominion over me (Romans 6:9,14). I thank Him for the gift of natural life (Acts 17:28), but more importantly I thank Him for the life that came as a result of believing on and acting upon His word (John 3:36, 5:24, 6:35, 6:47; 7:38). This life will allow me to live eternally with Him (John 6:40). I thank Him that He dwells in me by His Spirit (John 14:17), which leads and guides me in all things and brings to my remembrance all his commandments (John 14:26). John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 1 John 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.
