Deuteronomy  7:4 ¶ Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
5  And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Matthew 10:37  He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

I John 2;15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

In both the old and the new testaments the Lord  demands it all.  Second place won't do. He demands to be first in our affection.  However, this presents a conflict. My natural self rebels at such demands. I want to love, when and if, I want to love, on my terms.

How to resolve the conflict? When I dig into His word, I realize that He loved me first with an everlasting unchanging, undying love (I John 4:10,19). He set His love upon me, even when I was unlovable and rebellious (Deuteronomy  7:7-8).

I am now able to love Him fully and obey Him, not by anything that I have done, but because He changed my heart.

Deuteronomy 30:6  And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

He went to the cross for me that I might live. He shed His blood that I might be free. He died that I might be in fellowship with Him eternally.  How can I not love Him in return?

1 John 4:10  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.
1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.

Humor

While waiting for my first appointment in the reception room of a new dentist, I noticed his certificate, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered that a tall, handsome boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 30 years ago.  Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought.  This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was too old to have been my classmate.

After he had examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended the local high school.
"Yes," he replied. "When did you graduate?" I asked. He answered, "In 1964." "Why, you were in my class!" I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely and then asked, "What did you teach?"

Keep Looking Up!
