1st in a series on Jesus
the Light of the World
2 Corinthians
4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined
in our hearts, to [give] the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the
face of Jesus Christ.
For
God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, Most of us
learned in Sunday School that God is characterized as a being of light. This
light is described in I Timothy 6:16 as being unapproachable by man. I find it
interesting that when God spoke the words of creation, His first act was to
bring forth light. This light was prior to that of the sun and moon and
sustained life. When we get to the heavenly city, once again there will be
no need of the sun, because the glory of God and the Lamb will light that city
eternally (Revelation 21:23).
hath
shined in our hearts, Jesus came as the Light of the
world (John 8:12) , a light to the gentiles (Luke 2:32) and to people who
were sitting in darkness (Luke 1:79). He is the True Light which lights every
man who comes into the world (John 1:9). We didn't seek Him, He sought us.
to
[give] the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus
Christ. We remember that Moses had to wear a veil to approach
the intense light of God's glory and presence, otherwise he would have died
(Exodus 33:20). Fortunately for us, God veiled Himself in the form of
Jesus Christ that we might be able to learn of, commune with and become
extensions of His person (John 1:4, 9, 14; 12:41, 46; 14:9-10; Colossians
1;15; Hebrews 1:3).
So what do we do with this
light? (Continued next week).
Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be
hid.
