2 Corinthians 5:20  Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech [you] by us: we pray [you] in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

4th in a series on II Corinthians 5:17-21

To summarize thus far (vs. 17-19): We were made new creatures in Christ when we obeyed the gospel. This involved recognition of our sinful condition, repentance and being reconciled to God who now looks at us through the blood of Christ and sees us guiltless.
Our reconciliation was the result of God manifesting Himself in Christ to effect our salvation.

Now then we are ambassadors for Christ: An ambassador does not speak for himself, but rather on behalf of the one who has sent him. Jesus said that as the Father had sent Him, He was sending us into the world (John 20:21). He told us to go into the highways and hedges and compel men to come in (Luke 14:23).  The person who responds to our message is in reality responding to Him and the person who despises us and reject the message, is actually despising and rejecting Him.

Paul considered himself to be a slave whose sole duty was to preach the gospel (Ephesians 6:20). He stated that we all were able ministers of the new covenant, because we ministered through and by the Spirit of God (II Corinthians 3:6).

As though God did beseech [you] by us: God speaks to men through believers, simple flesh like you and me. He could thunder from heaven with flashing lightning and such, but He chose to speak through us. Humbling isn't it? Through His Spirit we speak comforting words, in season, to the weary (Isaiah 50:4).  As Jesus commanded,  we do not take thought beforehand of what we are going to say (Mark 13:11), but like the apostles we simply speak the things that we have seen and heard (Acts 4:19-20).

We pray [you] in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God: We do all that we can to persuade men and women to believe and obey the gospel and enter into the kingdom of God (Matthew 4:17). We urge and persuade (II Corinthians 5:11) all who will to seek Him while He is near(Isaiah 55:6).

Humor

One night a wife found her husband standing over their baby's crib. Silently she watched him. As he stood looking down at their sleeping infant, she saw on his face a mixture of emotions: disbelief, doubt, delight, amazement, enchantment--and even a little skepticism.

Touched by the unusual display and the deep emotions it aroused, with eyes glistening she slipped her arm around her husband.

"A penny for your thoughts," she whispered.

"It's amazing!" he replied. "I just can't see how anybody can make a crib like that for only $79.95!"
