Jesus Said: Except We Repent, We Will Perish!

This was written right after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. I had been in some discussions that week, where the question was asked, "Was hurricane Katrina a judgment of God?" My reply obviously was,"I don't know." But then Luke 13:1-5 came to mind.

Luke 13:1 ¶ There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?
3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?
5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Jesus spoke of some folks who had been slaughtered, and stated that they were not sinners over and above everybody else. He then added , "Except you repent, you will likewise perish." Then for emphasis, He spoke of some who had been killed when a tower fell on them. They were not extraordinary sinners either. He then repeated, "Except you repent, you will likewise perish."

We note that Jesus emphasized, the word "You." That means Me, You and Us. Not Ifs, Ands or Buts!

What if disaster came my way today? Would my possessions really matter? What if I were trapped in an attic for 3 days without water? I'd probably be like the rich man in hell,"Just give me a drop to cool my tongue."

What if my life was swept away? Nothing I had attained on this earth would really matter, would it? I would be standing naked and unadorned before the very One who shed His blood for me, answering for the deeds done in this flesh. If I have obeyed the gospel, the blood of Jesus will have me covered. If not? Oh how sad!

I believe we all have much to repent of. Some of carnal sin. Some of spiritual sin. Some of treating God like a bellhop or Santa Claus, ready to cater to our every whim. Some of having little or no compassion for the teeming masses who will eventually die without the Savior.

God is not willing that any perish but that all men repent {2 Peter 3:9). He has set life and death before us. Both are certain realities. In the final analysis, eternity and where I spend it is up to me. I can choose life or I could choose life. Life seems to better option, wouldn't you think (Ro. 8:13)?

I certainly have much to repent of. Help me dear Jesus.

II Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
