Jesus gave us the parable of the Publican and the Sinner. The publican boastful to God of his own achievements. He no doubt had status in his synagogue with his ritual fasting and tithing. No one would ever hear a bad word from his mouth or see him associate with any such as this lowly sinner. But God wasn't impressed. On the other hand the sinner had nothing to boast about. He knew what he was and what he needed.
Luke. 18;11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. I don't want to wait until judgment day to find out that I have been a a publican or a sinner who knew what he needed but refused to avail himself of God's saving grace. Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. This calls for self examination! 2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? After self examination, I have to agree that no good thing resides in this carnal flesh! Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. However, there is another available option: Total surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ, letting Him rule and reign in my mortal flesh. His will becoming my will. His thoughts being my thoughts . Letting Him enable me to will and to do His good pleasure. Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. In the text below , note the words "put on" and "let" . And what a difference it is when we let Jesus have total control of our lives. We'll find our selves conforming to His will. Colossians 2:12 ¶ Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
