Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
We present our bodies as a living sacrifice unto God knowing that the only acceptable sacrifice is of a life that is totally committed unto Christ and which shows forth His character and attributes. All else is vain and worthless. Verse 2 contains 3 key phrases: • And be not conformed to this world. When any pliable substance in placed into a mold, that substance conforms to the shape of the mold. How easy it is to take on the shape of the world without realizing it. The world does not place a high priority on the teaching of Jesus (Matthew 5 -7), such as going the second mile, loving and praying for our enemies, and placing the good of others before that of ourselves. The apostle John defines the world quite well. I John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. • But be ye transformed by the renewed of your minds. To be transformed is to be radically changed from one form to another. We do not accomplish this by reformation, but only by repentance. What we we cannot accomplish by our best efforts is quickly done by the blood of Jesus and the infilling of His Spirit. • That ye may prove what is the good, acceptable and perfect will of God. It has been said, "It's hard to serve God in an easy manner, but it's easy to serve God hard. In other words, The way is much easier when you give all you've got. God takes notice of every thing that we do and say to promote His kingdom (Matthew 25, Hebrews 6:10, Malachi 3:17). It won't be long before we hear Him Say "Well done, enter In." Keep pressing on and keep on looking up! When God becomes a Man and lives as a creature among His own creatures in Palestine, then indeed His life is one of supreme self-sacrifice and leads to Calvary. - C. S. Lewis Our Expository Studies
