The angel of the Lord appeared to the virgin Mary and gave her the startling news that she would conceive in her womb by the power of the Holy Ghost. That which she would bring forth would be called the Son of God. Most young girls in this time fervently hoped to be the one who would bear the promised Messiah. Mary received the words of the angel and said, "Let it be so." She then went to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was bearing the forerunner of the Lord, John the Baptist. As Mary and Elizabeth talked of the supernatural things that was happening to them both, Mary burst into spontaneous praise. Her song is recorded in Luke 1:46-55, and is commonly called The Magnificat of Mary.
Luke 1:46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Mary praised the majesty and greatness of God. She recognized that God was visiting the humble and fulfilling His Word to Israel. He had promised to become their Savior. God was showing His great power and demonstrating the power of His Name. What an example this simple, pure and holy young woman, has left for the ages to come. Her humility, submission and heartfelt gratitude to the God who was soon to enter this world at Bethlehem, is beyond description. I trust that in every waking hour of everyday, we are mindful of how the Lord purchased our salvation, and express our heartfelt praise and gratitude to Him continually. Psalms 35:9 And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD: it shall rejoice in his salvation. Isaiah 61:10 ¶ I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. Song: My God, My King and My Redeemer Worship is not about my enjoyment. It is about my enjoyment of God. It is not about my pleasure or my delight or my satisfaction. It is about my pleasure, delight, and satisfaction in God. Worship is not simply about glorifying God. It is about glorifying God by enjoying Him forever. - Sam Storms Our Expository Studies
