Once I Was Blind, But Now I See-Audio
John 9:25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner [or no], I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

We read in the ninth chapter of John that Jesus healed a blind beggar on the Sabbath day. The religious elite, who prided themselves as the keepers of heaven's gate, got a little excited. They examined the man's parent's, and then finally asked the man himself, "Who is this fellow who dared to heal on the Sabbath day? Surely He must be a sinner?" To which the man replied, " Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see."

The scribes and Pharisees began to revile this man and also to claim that Jesus had healed him by the power of the devil. The man replied with a simple argument. God doesn't hear the prayer of sinners. How could this man heal me by the power of the devil? At that, he was thrown out of the synagogue. After the man had been dismissed from the synagogue, Jesus found him once again. He asked, Do you believe on the Son of God? The man answered , "Who is He, that I might believe." Jesus replied , "You have seen Him and you are talking to Him right now." The man fell down and worshiped the Lord right there.

How easy it is to be drawn into pointless arguments that do nothing but cause friction and division. How quickly we find that our knowledge on many subjects is quite limited. Because of his circumstances, the blind man was a beggar. Since his parents were members of the synagogue, I assume that he had some basic religious instruction, even though he would be unable to read and write. The fact that he countered the Pharisees arguments proved that there certainly wasn’t anything wrong with his reasoning ability.

Basically he was a simple man trying to get by the best that he could. Like the blind man, I consider myself to be quite simple. There are a lot of things I don't know. There are others where I know just enough to get into trouble. There is one thing I know that will never change. I was lost and Jesus found me, I was blind but now I see. I, like the blind man made a conscience decision to follow Jesus and to be His disciple. Nobody can take that away from me.

How blessed it is to realize that one day we met the Savior who accepted us as we were without checking our pedigree and credentials. A relationship was formed with Him, that is unshakeable. When the storms of life arise, we have confidence that He will rebuke the wind. When the cupboard gets low, we know that he will multiply the loaves and fishes once again. The blind man had met Jesus. Without questioning, he allowed Jesus to dab clay made from spit upon his eyes and then obeyed the command to go and wash in the pool of Salome. If the command had come from just anyone, I doubt that he would have obeyed. However, when we are in the compelling presence of Jesus, things are much different.

1Corinthians 1:27 tells us that God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty. Jesus prayed a prayer of thanks that God had hidden spiritual things from the wise and prudent and revealed them unto babes (Mt. 11:25).

Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

Consider the apostles who were considered ignorant and unlearned. Because of the Holy Ghost unction that they possessed, they spoke out boldly to threatening crowds (Acts 2:1-40,4:19-30). They were assured of one thing and that was all that was necessary. They had seen the Master crucified and buried in a tomb. But when they visited the tomb three days later, they found that the tomb couldn’t hold Him. An angel announced, ”He is not here, He is risen.”

After obeying the Lord’s command to tarry in Jerusalem until they were endued with power from on high (Luke 24:49), they were filled with the Holy Spirit and from that point forward, they never hesitated to be a witness for Jesus. They traveled to the ends of the known world preaching the gospel of the kingdom, giving their lives in the process. They were simple people, just like us and the blind man. They would be the first to say that there were many things that they did not know. They weren’t religious professors. They didn’t have a string of degrees after their names. They were simple, rough hewn, unpolished Jewish fishermen. Their lack of pedigree didn’t matter because they had been to school with Jesus (Luke 24:45; Acts 1:3) and from that time until all but John had been martyred, they never hesitated to declare that which they had seen and heard (Acts 4:30; I John 1:3).

Perhaps you feel small and insignificant? We all do, but perhaps we need to take a little inventory. Do we remember the sweet presence of Jesus as He called to us, “Follow Me?” Do we remember how we felt when we arose from an altar of repentance and followed Him in the waters of baptism? Wasn’t it wonderful to realize that our sins were washed away and that even though we had been the vilest of sinners, we were forgiven? Do we remember the day that Jesus filled us with His precious Spirit? Do we remember the time that He healed our body? Do we remember being delivered from imminent disaster when we called out the name of Jesus and heaven instantly responded?

Friend if you remember any of that, you have something to say. You have a testimony that cannot be silenced. You can shout to the top of your lungs against every adversary, “Once I was blind, but now I see.”
