Last week, we looked at judgment with a bit of whimsy and sarcasm. Today, we'll be a bit more serious.
Romans 14:10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. 11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. 13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way. Our text above is very sobering and should be read most carefully. Everyone of us is going to bow at the name of Jesus Christ and give account of ourselves to Him (Php. 2:10-11). At that time all of our secrets will be revealed. Jesus said they would be shouted from the housetops (Luke 12:3). Paul said that we will all appear at the judgment seat of Christ to receive our due for the deeds done in this flesh, both good and bad (II Cor. 5:10). I doubt that there will be many, if any, who skate through totally unscathed. Romans 2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. The word of God is our only standard for rendering judgment if and when judgment is called for. Our preferences and opinions don’t count. However, any judgment that we might render is flawed since God alone knows what is in the heart of the one we are judging. Seems that any “righteous judgment” that we might render must be aided by the Spirit of God. We are incapable of doing so in our own abilities. John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. Some more sobering scriptures: Matthew 7:2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 1Corinthians 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. James 2:13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. Repeating verse 13 of our text: Romans 14:13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way. Quite simply: I have a full time job judging myself. Do I measure up to what I confess? If not, why not ? What am I going to do about it? Now is the time to make the necessary corrections. An old quote by the Scottish poet Robert Burns has been stuck in my head lately: "O wad some Pow'r the giftie gie us, To see oursels as others see us....." Translation: Oh, that God would give us the very smallest of gifts To be able to see ourselves as others see us It would save us from many mistakes and foolish thoughts We would change the way we look and gesture and to how and what we apply our time and attention.
