Our Citizenship is in Heaven
Repeated from 09-08-2012

Psalms 33:12 ¶ Blessed [is] the nation whose God [is] the LORD; [and] the people [whom] he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

I try to avoid politics in this devotional, but: After watching the newscasts of the respective major U.S. political parties, I can only cry out, “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven (Mt. 6:10). It was interesting to hear the vocal response of the delegates of one party as they objected to the  simple mention of God being reinserted into their party’s platform. Their keynote speakers were unabashed in their support of abortion and same sex marriage. The other party freely uses the name or at least the title  “God,” but I’m left to wonder if that is not much more than political cover to get the Christian vote? At any rate we can’t expect God’s blessing if the only mention of Him is in the ending of every speech that says, “God bless you and God bless America.”  Wouldn’t it be better to say, “God bless us in proportion to the measure that we bless Him.”  Which begs the question. Perhaps the sad shape of the world’s economies is a direct reflection of how much we have honored our Creator?

While we are in this world we have the responsibility to be good citizens.

1 Peter 2:17 Honour all [men]. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

We have the scriptural admonition to submit to earthly governments (1 Pe. 2:12-17), which are appointed by God (Ro. 13:1-5).

Psalms 33:12 ¶ Blessed [is] the nation whose God [is] the LORD; [and] the people [whom] he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

The text above refers to Israel as God’s chosen people whom He chose to be a peculiar treasure unto Himself, if they would obey His voice and keep His covenant.

Exodus 19:5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth [is] mine:

Due to Israel’s disobedience, membership in the nation of God has been expanded to any and all who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:29 And if ye [be] Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

We now have dual citizenship. We are citizens of our respective nations and also citizens of heaven.

1 Peter 2:9 But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

We are now pilgrims and strangers on this earth.

Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of [them], and embraced [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

Philippians 3:20 For our conversation (citizenship) is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: We are citizens of heaven and Jesus is our King. He has promised to return for us (John 14:3), so that we might be with Him eternally. There won’t be any political wrangling in heaven. Jesus will be our absolute ruler.

Psalms 98:8-9 Let the floods clap [their] hands: let the hills be joyful together before the LORD; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

Isaiah 11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important. -C. S. Lewis
