To Know the Love of Christ
It is said that a famous theologian, Karl Barth was asked to summarize his life's work in theology in one sentence. Mr. Barth quoted a song that he had learned at his mother's knee, "Jesus loves me, this I know for the bible tells me so....."

Well, knowing myself as only God knows me,  my first thought is, "Why me?" A popular song by that title asks, "What have I ever done to deserve God's Son?" Most of us know that the answer is "Absolutely nothing!"

1 John  4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.

God set His love upon us, just as He did for Ancient Israel. When they came out of Egypt, they were ex-slaves with no accomplishments to brag about. They had nothing to compare themselves to the established kingdoms that surrounded them. Yet God set His love upon them, just as He has done for us. We don't have much to brag about either, do we?

Deuteronomy 7:7 The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:

Ephesians 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

When we, like the great theologian first heard the gospel story of Jesus loving us to the extent that He laid down His life for us (Jn. 15:13), the seed of faith was planted in our hearts. As we learned more of the love of Jesus, this seed began to establish roots in our hearts. As we progress in God's love, we become grounded in Him, just like the giant redwood trees that have withstood violent storms for centuries.

When Christ dwells in our hearts by faith, our only desire is to emulate Him in every word and deed (Co. 3:17). He demonstrated His great love to all types of people, from Pharisees such as Nicodemus and the rich young ruler to a weeping prostitute who knelt at His feet. As we comprehend His love, we began to realize that our awesome God surpasses every dimension known to man. In our selfish natural selves, we find that some folks are a bit easier to love than others. God expects us to get outside of our natural selves and love humanity just as He does.

Ephesians 3:18  May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;

As we exercise our faith and put the love of Christ into action, we realize His love is beyond measure and description. We find ourselves progressively being filled with all of His fullness. From faith the faith (Ro. 1:17) and glory to glory (2 Co. 3:18).

Ephesians 3:19  And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

1 John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

1 John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.
