By Faith Abraham Believed and Obeyed - Audio
We first hear of father Abraham in Genesis 12:1 when the Lord told him to pick up and leave his country and his kindred and journey to a land that the Lord would show him. Abraham lived in an advanced culture in Ur of the Chaldees. They had all the niceties and luxuries of life. We aren’t told in what form or manner the Lord appeared to him, but nonetheless, he believed God and proceeded to obey his voice.
Hebrews 11: 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
When Abraham arrived in Canaan, he didn’t possess it immediately. In fact he never possessed it in his lifetime. He and his son Isaac and grandson Jacob, lived as nomads in tents in the land that they were promised.
Vss 11-12 tell us that God promised Abraham and Sarah a son in whom all the families of the earth would be blessed (Genesis 28:14). Even this did not happen until Abraham and Sarah were well past the age of producing offspring.
Abraham’s physical seed did inherit the land and his spiritual seed, those who believe in Christ is innumerable. Abraham is called the father of us all (Romans 4:16; Galatians 3:7). Because we follow his example of faith, we are allowed to receive his blessing, the promise of God’s spirit (Galatians 3:14). Some folks want to call their possessions and bank accounts, The Blessings of Abraham, but I prefer the gift of God’s Spirit, don’t you?
Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob died believing the promises of God. Yes, they expected to inherit the land of Canaan, but they were also looking ahead thousands of years for the kingdom of God. They looked for a city whose builder and maker is God. They confessed that they were pilgrims and strangers in the earth.
Because they were looking for a better, heavenly country (Hebrews 11:14-16), God is pleased to be called their God, for He has prepared for them a city. Jesus said He was going to prepare a place for us that where He is we may be also (John 14:1-3). I think that beats anything that we have here on this earth.
So how does this apply to us?
We have been called by God to follow Him daily, from faith unto faith (Ro. 1:17) and glory unto glory (2 Co.3:18). We walk one step at a time at the Lord’s direction. While we are happy to live in a land of liberty, we are still pilgrims and strangers in this world. We are in the world but separate from it (Re. 18:4).
Abraham saw the day of Christ and rejoiced. We have been blessed to be a partaker of that which Abraham saw (John 8:56). While we are blessed to be partakers of the kingdom of God through the baptism of the Holy Ghost (Ro. 14:17), we are anxiously awaiting its total fulfillment. Things of this world won’t matter because we will have been caught to be with our Lord eternally. When we get there, we’ll see Abraham Isaac and Jacob. We will rejoice together with them in that heavenly city that God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Co. 2:9). We will look back and recognize that the hardships of the journey do not compare to the prize that we have obtained (1 Co. 9:25).
Because our faith has endured, God will not be ashamed to be called our God.
