Thoughts on the Promises of God:
The Promise of Resurrection

This week, Jihadists invaded a Christian prayer service at a school in Kenya and slaughtered 148 attendees.  Seems like this is getting to be a regular happening. The news didn’t tell us if they were Catholic, Apostolic, Baptist, Lutheran or whatever.  It was simply stated that they were attending a Christian prayer service. So obviously, if we’re in the right place at the right time, just confessing the name of Jesus Christ  is enough to get us killed.

Jesus said that before the end, we would be hated of all men for His name’s sake.

Next time it could happen in the good ole USA, perhaps in a church of one of our denominations, eh?  And then of course, Christians are being demeaned by those assailing the current Religious Liberties Legislation.

Matthew 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all [men] for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

The psalms and the prophets foretold the resurrection of our Lord. Psalms 22 gives us a vivid description of the suffering of Jesus on the cross. At Pentecost, the apostle Peter quoted King David’s prophesy concerning the resurrection of Christ. His soul would not be left in hell or His body suffer corruption (Ps. 16:10).

The risen Christ appeared to two men on the road to Emmaus. They were forlorn and dejected because that Jesus had been killed. Jesus began to talk to them  and referring to the writings of  Moses and the prophets, He  opened up their understanding to the things that were written concerning Himself (Lu. 24:27). Their hearts burned within them as they hurried back to Jerusalem to tell the still doubtful disciples that they has seen the Lord (Lu. 24:32).

After spending 40 days listening to Jesus as He gave them commandments pertaining to the kingdom of God, the disciples were doubters no longer (Ac. 1:3). They and many others who had seen the risen Lord (1 Co. 16:6) went to the ends of the earth proclaiming the gospel news that Jesus was alive and enthroned in heaven (Ac. 8:4), many giving their lives for the privilege for doing so.

While the apostles and disciples were walking with Jesus during His ministry, they were slow to grasp the teachings of Jesus concerning His death and resurrection.

Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and [of] the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

John 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Of course that all changed after they were baptized with the Spirit. At Pentecost, Peter proclaimed that he and the other 119 disciples who had just been filled with the Spirit were all witnesses to the resurrection of the Lord.

Acts 2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

Acts 3:15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

Jesus also promised us resurrection from the death of sin and promised us new life in Himself.

John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

John 14:19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

The New Testament writers reaffirmed the promises of Jesus concerning our new life in Him.

Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

We also have the affirmation that Jesus intercedes for us in heaven.

Romans 8:34 Who [is] he that condemneth? [It is] Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

We not only have the promise of life in Christ in this life, but we are promised to appear with Him in glory.

Colossians 3:4 When Christ, [who is] our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

The world is full of doubters, but: If after walking and talking with the risen Christ, the New Testament saints were so convinced that the promises of Jesus concerning His death and resurrection and that the Old Testament scriptures had been fulfilled, that they willingly laid down their lives for the privilege of preaching His gospel: I have to conclude that the promises of everlasting life in Jesus will be fulfilled to the nth degree just like the promises of His resurrection from the dead.

Happy Resurrection Sunday and God Bless.

Somebody Has Said

To preach Christianity meant (to the Apostles) primarily to preach the Resurrection. … The Resurrection is the central theme in every Christian sermon reported in the Acts. The Resurrection, and its consequesnces, were the 'gospel' or good news which the Christians brought.  - C. S. Lewis , (Miracles, ch. 16)
