Thoughts on the Promises of God
I’ve been thinking lately on the promises of God. Men make promises and fail to keep them, either by deceit or changing circumstances. Not so with our God, He does not lie and He never gets flustered by changing circumstances. He’s never too busy to hear our cry and unlike us He never forgets the things that He has promised. Looking in my trusty Thompson Chain Reference Bible, I find about 45 different scripture lists covering every possible condition in which we might find ourselves. There are promises of blessings, cleansing, comfort and deliverance, just to name a few. There are promises to the humble, the meek, the merciful and to over comers. There are also promises to those who deny Him and fail to keep the faith. Somebody has counted and found over 3000 promises of God in the bible. Surely that should be enough material to last us for a series in the coming weeks.

Some general observation on the promises of God:

At the dedication of the temple, Solomon affirmed that God never failed to keep His promises.

When Solomon dedicated the temple that he had built for the Lord, he addressed the assembled people and reminded them that God had  not failed in one word of the good promises that He had made to Moses. He made an impassioned prayer asking for God’s favor and blessing. At this time of spiritual renewal, Israel had subdued their enemies and were experiencing peace and prosperity.  The glory of God filled the new temple and overwhelmed the priests to the point that they were unable to minister.

(bold faced emphasis mine)

1 Kings 8:56 Blessed [be] the LORD, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant.

Of course the promises of God are conditional based on our obedience to His word. God answered Solomon and told Him that there would be times He would send judgment because the people had failed Him. But He promised that He would hear their prayers of repentance, if they simply humbled themselves and prayed. That is still applicable today, eh?

1 Chronicles 7:14  If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

The apostle Paul affirmed that God keeps His promises in the Lord Jesus Christ. His promises are positive and unchanging in Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians  1:20  For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

To summarize 2 Peter 1-4: We have obtained our precious faith because of the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ. Because of our knowledge of Him we have obtained grace and peace. His divine power has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness. And His divine power has given us great and precious promises that allow us to escape the pollutions that are in this world because of lust.

2 Peter 1:1 ¶  Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2  Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3  According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4  Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

God promised us eternal life, before the world began.

Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

1 John 2:25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, [even] eternal life.

So, when cares of life overwhelm us, let us remember the One who has left us these 3000 or more promises and see if we can remember a time that He has not kept His word. Then thank Him for His promises that give us life and strength to face whatever lies before us.     God does not give us everything we want, but He does fulfill His promises, leading us along the best and straightest paths to Himself. -    Dietrich Bonhoeffer
