 Keeping Our Eyes Focused on the Light

Matthew 6:19 ¶  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20  But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22  The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23  But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24  No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

When I was a Sunday School kid way back in the first half of the last century, we used to sing this little song, which is still applicable today, regardless of our age.

Be careful little eyes what you see
Be careful little eyes what you see
For the Father up above is looking down in love
Be careful little eyes what you see

Other verses went on to tell us to be careful about what we say, what we do and where we go, etc.

The context of the scripture text above is about lusting after the wealth of this world. When we turn our eyes away from Jesus, we are turning away from the light of the world (Jn. 12:46) and giving our attention unto Satan the god of this world (2 Co. 4:4). Jesus said that when we look on evil, our whole body is full of great darkness. He went on to say that we simply cannot serve two masters. We’ll either love Jesus or hate Him, depending on where my eyes are focused. There is no in between.

I learned a long time ago that I can’t look in two directions at once and that light doesn’t shine around corners.

John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

2 Corinthians  4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

I heard a pastor comment recently about how darkness is sweeping over the world to the extent that it is said that we are living in the post Christian era. There are more mosques in Europe than churches and how that church membership and participation is declining here in the USA, especially among the so called millennial generation. This is exactly as the apostle Paul predicted. He said that there would be a falling away from the faith, before the Lord’s return.

2 Thessalonians  2:3 ¶ Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

While we await His return, we have a full time fight on our hands. Another thing I learned  back in school yard was that it was wise to keep my eyes focused straight ahead, if somebody was throwing a punch in my direction.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].

The apostle also gave us a list of prevalent conditions during the last days. Did he leave anything out?

2 Timothy 3:1 ¶  This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3  Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4  Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Perhaps you’ve noticed the darkness that is being presented in TV and movies and newspapers? All that flashing light and rhythmic crashing sounds has a purpose and it isn’t to glorify God. I saw one headline that said it was all about witches and headless horses and I might add zombies and any other type of occult activity. All of which serve to take our eyes off of Jesus and glorify the god of this world, whose only aim is to devour us as a roaring lion (1 Pe. 5:8).

Perhaps you’ve noticed that you can be watching something quite innocent on one channel and then a commercial will flash on promoting something totally evil on another. Nobody said that the devil was dumb!

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Psalms 112:4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: [he is] gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

Romans 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now [are ye] light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

Revelation 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Another chorus comes to mind:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full into His wonderful face
And the things of this world will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.
