What in the World is Going On?

2 Timothy 3:1 ¶  This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3  Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4  Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

This week we have seen several unsettling events, including: The continual slaughter of non-Muslims in Syria and Iraq continues. Killings  by radicalized Lone Wolf terrorists at the urging of ISIS. A school shooting in Washington state by a popular student and of course the breakout of the Ebola virus. As I was watching the news on CNN, they kept asking the question that we have used for a title, “What in the world is going on.”  I would say, nothing that Jesus and the apostles didn’t warn us about.

In light of the killings of people who won’t deny their Christian faith. I wonder if this slaughter of believers will come to our shores?  Those doing the killing of believers who won’t denounce their Christian faith think they are doing their god’s will.

John 16:2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
  Distress of nations with perplexity: It’s easy to criticize our president and government leaders for inaction, but the fact is they don’t really know which way to turn. Of course, turning to the Lord would solve a lot of problems. Prayer for our leaders, as God’s word commands  us to do, would be most helpful (1 Ti 2:1-30).

The sea and the waves roaring:  Seems to me that there is a great increase in the number and severity of tornadoes and hurricanes, not to mention tsunamis.

Our text accurately describes the ever increasing vulgarity and debasement of our society. Many are lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful and  unholy,

Without natural affection, etc: Every day our local TV and newspapers beat the drums in favor of same sex marriage. They even find it necessary to illustrate the fact by showing pictures of two people of the same sex kissing.

Nobody mentions the apostle Paul’s denunciation of this practice (Ro. 1:26-27). Here in Nevada there is an ongoing rush for state regulated and taxed medical marijuana. I recently saw a billboard advertising Dr. Reefer, which pretty much explains the direction we are headed on that subject. Pretty soon, a good part of the population will be legally stoned.

Lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; I like football, but I often wonder how long it will be before the number of folks watching the NFL games will exceed the number of people attending Sunday service? The apostle Paul  did tell us that in the end times there would be a great falling away (2 Th. 2:2) and Jesus said that because of iniquity the love of many would grow cold (Mt. 24:12). 1 Timothy 4:1 warns us that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Timothy 4:3 tells us folks will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.

2 Peter 3:3 ¶ Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

In our Thoughts on the Life of Christ , you may find our thoughts on Matthew 24 of interest. Discourse on the Last Days

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Jesus said that when we see these things begin to come to pass ( a continual process) we are to look up, knowing that our redemption is drawing near. Jesus said that He would come unexpectedly. It might be morning, noon or night (Mr. 13:35). Our job is to be waiting, watching and working, so that  day doesn’t catch us unawares (Mt. 24:46).

Mark 13:35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:

I believe that Jesus had our generation in mind when He compared those in the last days to the sinners before the flood of Noah.

Matthew 24:37  But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

The obvious truth is that we are seeing God’s word fulfilled to the nth degree. We have a choice: Jump on the band wagon of the world as it descends into hell or demonstrate our faith by holy living and godliness, as we await our Lord’s return.

2 Peter 3:11 ¶ [Seeing] then [that] all these things shall be dissolved, what manner [of persons] ought ye to be in [all] holy conversation and godliness,
