The Name Above Every Name

Philippians 2:9  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

In writing to the Philippian church, the apostle Paul follows his usual pattern of bridging one thought to another, by the use of the words Wherefore and Therefore.

Here the word Wherefore refers us back to Paul’s urging that we exercise The Mind of Christ by following His example of voluntary humility and obedience, even to the point of martyrdom.

Jesus laid  down all of His heavenly prerogatives and walked among us as a man who was tempted with all the things that tempt us today, but He never sinned (He. 4:15). Because of His sinless human life, He was able to go to the cross as God’s spotless lamb, who bore all the sins of this world (1 Pe. 1:19). and voluntarily laid down His life on our behalf (Jn. 10:10). Because of this, He was bestowed with the name above every name.

Jesus gave us the pattern of voluntary humility and submission that results in being exalted by God.  He told us that we could not be His disciple unless we were willing to forsake all and to pick up our cross and follow Him (Mk. 8:34). He also told us that we would receive eternal exaltation and glorification, if we followed His example.

Mt 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

2 Timothy 2:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with [him]: if we deny [him], he also will deny us:

Romans 8:17 ¶ And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with [him], that we may be also glorified together.

The angel announced that our Lord would be called Jesus, because He would save His people from their sins (Mt. 1:21). His name simply means that the Lord Jehovah has become our Savior (Is. 12:2; Ps. 118:14). When we check our family names we are pleased if we can  trace them back a couple hundred years. Jesus came to us in His Father’s name which dates back to eternity past (Jn. 5:43) and Micah 5:2 refers to Him as the One whose goings forth have been from old from everlasting.

Paraphrasing Ephesians 1:15-23: When we call on the name of Jesus we are calling on the One whom God raised from the dead and placed at His right hand of power and authority. He is far above all the power, might and dominion of this world. His name is exalted far above every other name, not only in this world, but in that which is to come. All things are under His feet and we, His church,  are subject to Him as we express His fullness to a lost and dying world.

When we call on the name of Jesus, we are calling on the name of the One by whom all things were created and by whom all things consist (Co. 1:16-17). The One who contains all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Co. 2:9) and who has all the power of heaven and earth (Mt. 28:18). He is the One who has promised, that if we abide in Him, He would  do anything that we ask in His name, that is according to His will (Jn. 14:14, 15:7; 1 Jn. 5:14).

Philippians 2:10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

Every knee will bow, period.  The hierarchy of heaven is already exalting Him as Holy LORD of hosts: whose glory fills the whole earth (Is. 6:3). They’ll be silent and have to listen as the church sings the song of redemption.

Revelation 4:11  Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Revelation  5:9  And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

While we are singing and adoring our Lord, the unredeemed dead will also acknowledge Him. All of the past rulers of the world who killed thousands and millions as they sought to rule vast empires, will acknowledge His name and His Lordship.

All of the angels, including Satan himself, whom Jesus saw being cast out of heaven because of their rebellion, will bow their knees.

Philippians 2:11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

I’m reminded of the old Fram oil filter ad where a mechanic  says something like, “Pay me a few bucks now for an oil filter  or pay me a lot later for an engine repair.”  We can go our own way and ignore the Lordship of Jesus in our lives, only to bow our knees at His throne, before we go into the eternal punishment of hell. Or, we can acknowledge Him now and submit to His Lordship here, and reap the eternal reward of life with Him.

Song: O Tell Me His Name Again

Somebody Has Said
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds, In a believer's ear! It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear. - John Newton
