Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. I like the rendering of the NIV and the New American Standard versions. The use of the definite article “the” gives a bit more emphasis to the text. God did not simply give Jesus a name but He bestowed on Him the name that is above every name. Philippians 2:9 NASV Therefore also God highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name. In Proverbs 30:4 the prophet Agur used a bit of hyperbole to declare himself ignorant of the name of God and the name of His Son. Proverbs 30:4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what [is] his name, and what [is] his son’s name, if thou canst tell? Agur asked, “Who had ascended or descended to and from heaven. Jesus, speaking of Himself, gives us the answer in John 3:13 and the apostle Paul affirmed it in Ephesians 4:10. John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, [even] the Son of man which is in heaven. Ephesians 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things. The prophet Agur further asked, “Who hath gathered the wind in his fists?” It was Jesus who spoke to the wind and said, Peace, be still (Mark 4:39). Agur asked, “Who hath bound the waters in a garment, and Who established the ends of the earth?” Once again Isaiah has the answer: Isaiah 40:12 ¶ Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? Isaiah 40:26 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these [things], that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that [he is] strong in power; not one faileth. Isaiah 40:28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, [that] the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? [there is] no searching of his understanding. Now concerning the name of God’s Son. Isaiah said His name would be called Immanuel, which means “God with us.” Jesus wasn’t just a good man as some would say, He was God manifested in flesh for the purpose of our redemption. Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. God had revealed the name to Moses at the burning bush. He declared that His name was I AM THAT I AM and that this name would be His memorial unto all generations (Ex. 3:13-15). Jesus made Himself God by using His unutterable name on several occasions. He said: I AM, the Way, the Truth and the Life (Jn. 14:6-11) I Am the Resurrection and the Life (Jn. 11:25; Is. 43:10) I Am The Good Shepherd (Jn. 10:11; Is. 40; Ps. 23; Ez.34:11). I Am The Light of the World (Ge. 1:3; Jn. 8:12, 12:46) I Am The Bread of Life (Jn. 6:35). The Jews fully understood what He was saying. They accused Him of blasphemy for making Himself God. John 10:33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. See: The I AMs of Jesus Isaiah further prophesied concerning the names of the Son of God. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. He identified Jesus as Wonderful and that He is. He is beyond description and comprehension. Jesus is our Counsellor. He knows the answers to our questions before we even speak (Is. 65:24). Jesus is The Mighty God. Titus 2:13 describes Him as the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. Jesus is The Everlasting Father. Jesus claimed that He and His Father were one (John 10:30). Phillip asked to see the Father and Jesus asked if after all the time they had been together, he still didn’t understand who He was? Jesus said that He that has seen me has seen the Father (Jn. 14:9). Jesus also told Thomas, “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him (John 14:7).” He is The Prince of Peace - Until He is acknowledged this world will continue in violence and bloodshed. When He reigns, the nations of the world will beat their swords into plowshares (Is. 2:4). Revelation 19:13 And he [was] clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. God cannot be separated from His Word. Jesus is the Word of God by Whom all things were created and by Whom all things consist. He is the image of the invisible God. It pleased the Father that in Him should all the fullness dwell. He has the preeminence in all things (Co. 1:16-19). Jesus is the eternal Word of God that was made flesh and we behold Him as the only begotten of God (Jn. 1:1,14). He walked among us as both God and man. He knew what it meant to labor and sweat. He also knew what it meant to be tempted in all the ways that we are tempted, thus qualifying Him to be our High Priest (He. 4:15). Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. The angel announced the name that God had bestowed upon Him at His birth. His name would be called Jesus which means Jehovah Savior. He would be our sin bearer Who shed His blood to save us from our sins and provide healing for our bodies (Is. 53:4-12). When we see Him, we won’t be seeing the suffering servant, We will behold Him and know Him as the KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS (Re. 19:16). So, our title asks, “What’s in a Name?” I would say Everything! He is my everything, He is my all He is my everything, both great and small He gave His life for me, made everything new He is my everything, oh how about you? Free Ebooks That You Can Download.
