Bringing Every Thought to the Captivity of Christ

2 Corinthians  10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Romans 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

The two verses above both speak of captivity: Either we are slaves to Christ or we are bound by the law of sin. It’s one or the other, there is no middle ground.

We are told to reject anything and everything that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. We do this by analyzing our every thought, rejecting the useless and bringing every thing else to the obedience of Christ. The word bringing is a verb that denotes continuing action and action denotes work. Just as we sweep the floors of our homes continually, our minds demand the same care, or the dirt will automatically accumulate.

Just as we were endowed with a mind at our natural birth, we were given the mind of Christ at our spiritual birth (1 Co. 2:16). Both have to be exercised and developed or they become useless. Just as our natural minds become weak and dull from lack of use, so goes our spiritual minds.

Philippians tells us to let or allow the mind of Christ work within our being. This implies that we have a choice in the matter.

Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Peter tells us that we accomplish this by being sober and by maintaining the grace (unmerited favor and divine enablement) that was given to us when we first believed.

1 Peter 1:13 ¶ Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

The apostle Paul gives us the  admonition in 2 Corinthians 10:5  to bring every thought to the captivity of Christ. In Colossians 3:5 he gives us a checklist of sins that compromise our spiritual position:

Colossians 3:8 ¶ But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Most of these sins are demonstrated by the words that we allow to come forth from out mouths. When we see these things trying to come forth, it is time to do a heart check. Jesus told us in Matthew 12:24 and Luke 6:45 that what comes out of our mouth proceeds from the abundance of our heart. Jesus also told us in Matthew 12:36-37 that we would be judged for every idle word that come out of our mouths. We will either be justified or condemned by the words that we speak. That’s pretty strong stuff, straight from the Master Himself. I think it’s time for me to do a heart check and the sooner the better.

In bringing our every thought, action and reaction to the captivity of the obedience of Christ, our necessary work will include:

That we put on our new man which is patterned after our Creator.

Ephesians 4:24  And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Colossians3:10  And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

That we resist the evil one by putting on the whole armor of God, not just the pieces that are most comfortable.

Ephesians 6:11  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Because we are the redeemed and chosen of God, we must exercise His spiritual attributes and graces.

Colossians 3:12  Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Colossians 3:14  And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

We do all this willingly in an effort to please and glorify our Lord and Master, who bought us with the price of His own blood (Ac. 20:28; Re. 1:5).

1 Corinthians  6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

I’m reminded of a young people’s leader from way back who continually stressed that anything that came forth from our mouths should first pass through these three gates. Is it Kind? Is it True? And most of all: Is it necessary?
