A Date With Destiny

I will be attending a memorial service tomorrow for a departed friend. I’m sure that the gospel message will be presented, but for many in attendance, it will just be something that they politely endure and then ignore. To their own peril, I might add.

Death is not a subject that any of us likes to dwell on. We know that it will come upon us some day, but we would prefer not to think about it. However, God’s word is not silent on the subject.

The Lord knew us while we were starting to develop in our mother’s womb.

Psalms 139:16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all [my members] were written, [which] in continuance were fashioned, when [as yet there was] none of them.

Actually, He knew us a long time before that. He saw us when He was separating the land from the seas and assigning names to the stars and planets of heaven (Is. 40:6).  While He was in the naming process, He wrote everybody’s name in His book of life (Mal. 3:16; Re. 13:8, 17:8, 20:12).

Sadly, Adam sinned and death entered the world as a result. All were doomed to die and be separated from the presence of God.

Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou [art], and unto dust shalt thou return.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

As we were being named in the Book of Life, Jesus was foreordained to die for the sins of all creation.  Mankind was faced with a choice that would determine his destiny: Death and eternal damnation, or eternal life with Jesus. The choice is up to us.

1Peter 1:20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

Ephesians 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

While we were all under the sentence of death, it gave God  no pleasure to see anyone perish. He loved this world so much that He provided Himself as a remedy. He clothed Himself in human flesh and became subject to all of the trials and temptations that we face (1 Ti. 3:16). Jesus sacrificed His life on the cross to pay for our sins (Mr. 10:45; 1 Ti. 2:6). He tasted death for every man (He. 2:9). If we believe with all of  heart, we’ll live (Ac. 8:37). If we reject it we will be condemned (Mk. 16:16).

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Jesus paid for our salvation by His death on the cross. There is nothing we can do to add to the price that He paid. I believe it is insulting to Him when we try. Good deeds are nice, but they don’t save us. A clean life is good but meaningless, unless prompted by the indwelling Spirit of God.  God won’t see these things unless He can see them through the blood of Jesus (Ex. 12:13).

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:

We mourn the loss of our friends and family but we  need not be sorrowful for those who die in Jesus.  Jesus promised that they will live forever.

John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

How sad it will be for those  who refuse the salvation purchased by Jesus and who arrogantly choose to stand before God in the filthy rags of their own righteousness (Is. 64:6).

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Romans 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

However, death holds no terror for those who die in Jesus. We have the hope and assurance that we will arise out of our graves to meet Him when He appears.

1 Corinthians 15:51 ¶  Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52  In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54  So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55  O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
56  The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
57  But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Just as Jesus grieved for those who were soon to crucify Him , He still grieves over the world today. He is calling to all of us to come to Him.

Matthew 11:28  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
