Obey the Words of the Lord

John 2:5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do [it].

Shortly after the baptism of Jesus, He and His disciples were invited to a wedding Feast in Cana. Jesus obviously cared for the wedding partners as He endured an estimated 20 hour hike to get there. We also can conclude that Jesus approved of marriage and He wasn’t against having a good time (within the bounds of propriety of course). It is said that weddings feast in that day could last from 7 to 14 days. That’s a lot of wine, no wonder they ran out. I’m sure that the hosts were embarrassed, and that Jesus felt the sting of their embarrassment, just as He feels the pain of all our failures and disappointments and even our sin (He. 2:18, 4:15-16, 5:2, 1 Pe. 5:7).

Well, you know the story, Mary, the mother of Jesus took the problem to the One who could fix it. After a gentle rebuke, she told the wedding attendants to just do whatever He tells you to do. The servants didn’t second guess or offer other solutions, they simply  obeyed  the Lord’s instruction without questioning and the problem was fixed.

The key words of out text are whatsoever and do.

Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Jesus said that His words were absolute and eternal.

Luke 21:33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Everyday, our senses are bombarded by words that appeal to our carnal nature. Jesus said that they profit nothing. His words however, are a life giving Spirit (Jn. 1:1) that produces eternal life.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life.

Jesus said that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments. He and His Father will love us and be pleased to come and abide with us.

John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

However, if we reject His words, we will be subject to judgment and judged by the very words that we have rejected. If we are ashamed of His words, He will be ashamed of us.

John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Mark 8:38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

We have the promise that our prayers will be heard and answered when the word of the Lord abides in our hearts.

John 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Jesus is well aware of all the conflicting and detrimental words that we are subject to every day. He asks us to tune these out and to listen to the voice of the Spirit. Doing so will ensure eternal life with Him in His paradise.

Revelation 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

Somebody Has Said
The Word of God well understood and religiously obeyed is the shortest route to spiritual perfection. And we must not select a few favorite passages to the exclusion of others. Nothing less than a whole Bible can make a whole Christian. --AW. Tozer
