Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. An interesting article on the sports page of the local Las Vegas newspaper brought the above verse to mind. A local young man quit as a professional boxer with a 3 win and zero loss record. He decided that the constant pain and agony from continual training just wasn’t worth it. He figured that he would have arthritis in his hands when he grew older. I’m sure he also looked around and saw broken down fighters with mushroom brains and realized that he could be in the same shape down the road. The young man’s family owned and operated five local sandwich shops. He took an option to start at the bottom chopping lettuce and learning the business while he worked his way to a management position in the family business. Smart kid! He won’t wind up like the late Ann Landers described as, “Too soon old and too late smart.” Well, we’ve all had our fling with the attractiveness of sin and found that it doesn’t pay (He. 11:25). As a young man, I noticed that when I read the obituaries of people I knew who smoked, they were still in their sixties. This was before the Surgeon Generals report about nicotine. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Smoking didn’t pay, it led to death. Likewise, all sin leads to death whether it be the visible sins of the flesh or the hidden sins of lust, hatred, envy and strife. However, like the young man in our example, our heavenly Father is the proprietor of a very large enterprise (Jn. 14:2) and He has offered us a management position (1 Co 6:2; Mt 19:28). Of course we have to start at the bottom, first by acknowledging that we are sinners doomed to die and accepting the fact that Jesus died in our place. Having acknowledged this, we make a lifelong commitment to renounce sin and follow Him. The result is eternal life with Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
