Christmas greetings to each and every one who is on the About-Him.Com devotional list. I consider it an honor to be able to share my thoughts with you all, most every week. Our list has about 570 names. We come from different countries, cultures and church traditions. We probably could find differences of opinion on many subjects, but one thing that we have in common is that we dearly love the Lord Jesus Christ. He is our Savior and for us there is no turning back. I recall my old Uncle Burley who would stand to testify for His Lord every chance that he got. He always ended his testimony with these words: I’ve lost my reputation in the world and I’ve come too far to turn back now.” I believe that is the cry of each and every one of us. Isaiah 40:9 ¶ O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God! 10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. 11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. In the 40th chapter of Isaiah, about 700 years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the prophet Isaiah prophesied of His coming. He described Him as the Lord God who would feed His flock like a shepherd and carry their lambs in His bosom. Aren’t you grateful for His tender comforting embrace? It was the custom at that time for the women to announce big events with joyful celebration of song and dance. Isaiah instructs them that when they see the Lord God in their midst, they are to go to the high mountains and cry to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” Jesus laid aside His Divinity and came to us as a humble suffering servant (Ph. 2:5-11). He set aside His nature and assumed ours. Most of Israel rejected Him, but to all of us who have received Him, He gave the power to become the sons of God. The angels of God worshipped Him as He lay in a manger (He. 1:6; Lu. 2:13). At this season, we make note of the manger but we realize that He’s not there any longer. He is sitting on the throne of heaven (Re. 3:21, 4:2) and we are thankful for the privileged to approach Him there (He. 4:16). It took seven hundred years for Jesus to appear and fulfill this prophecy. Israel had to wait for its fulfillment and we also have to patiently wait for God’s plans to be fulfilled. Isaiah 40:27 ¶ Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God? 28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. Most of Israel tired of waiting for the fulfillment of God’s promise and went about doing their own thing, thinking that God was unaware of their doings. We have the same situation today. Jesus said that because of iniquity, the love of many would grow cold (Mt. 24:12). Paul stated that there would be a great falling away at the end time (2 Th. 2:3). Peter told us that men would scoff at the promise of the Lord’s return (2 Pe. 3:4). Isaiah 40:29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. We all grow weary at times. We despair of the sinful conditions of this depraved world and we grieve when innocent children are gunned down in their schoolroom. But! If we wait upon the Lord, we will renew our strength. We’ll be able to run without becoming weary and to walk and not faint. We will be restored to our youthful vigor, so that we can go to the highest mountain and loudly proclaim that the babe of Bethlehem is speaking to us from His throne in heaven. Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
