Hearing the Voice of the Lord

Psalms 143:1 ¶  «A Psalm of David.» Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.
2  And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.
3  For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead.
4  Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.

Bible translators and commentators assign this psalm to King David.  Some feel that it was written when he was hiding from King Saul and others feel that it was written during the rebellion of his son Absalom.

At any rate, it was written at a very low point in his life. David needed a speedy answer to his prayer and yet he realized his unworthiness to even be approaching the throne of grace.  Anybody identify with this? If so, aren’t you happy for God’s never ending grace? Aren’t you happy that His mercy endures forever? Where would we be without a Savior who not only made atonement for our sins with His precious blood but who lives and makes constant intercession for us at the throne of God?

Psalms 143:5  I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.
6  I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.
7 ¶  Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

David remembered the days of old which were happier days. He remembered going with his friends to house of God on a feast day and being filled with joy and praise, but sadly those days were now just a memory for him (Ps. 42:4). Probably many of us identify with this. Friends move away and church conditions change, not always for the better. We, like David, find ourselves in a dry and thirsty land and we reach out to touch the God who once seemed so near. Well, He hasn’t changed and He hasn’t left us. We remember that He led Israel through the wilderness with a sheltering cloud and a pillar of fire. God led His people in the wilderness, He never followed them. We have to remember that yesterday in gone, but God is constantly leading us forward to our final destination.

Psalms 143:8  Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

There are many voices in the world competing for our attention (1Co 14:10 ), but none can compare to the still small voice of the Lord. The prophet Elijah was in a similar state of depression when he was running from Jezebel.  He was presented with wind, earthquake and fire, all of which were loud and visibly impressive, but God was in none of these. He spoke in a quiet, yet distinctive, voice that Elijah was able to identify (1 Ki. 19:12). When we start our day with all of the competing stimuli of the world shut off, the still small voice of the Lord will give us direction for the day.

Psalms 42:8 [Yet] the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song [shall be] with me, [and] my prayer unto the God of my life.

Psalms 59:16 But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

Isaiah 48:17 Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I [am] the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way [that] thou shouldest go.

On a personal note: An online friend posted that his company was holding a sweepstakes where one of the grand prize packages contain a Fender Stratocaster guitar and a fancy recording microphone. I don’t know why I should be so blessed, but I was one of the grand prize winners.

We just returned from vacation on the California coast. This 77 year old actually rode the waves on a boogie board. Thank God for His enduring health.
