Our Choice: The Strait or the Broad Way

Matthew 7:13  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

An old spiritual comes to mind that states, “Everybody talkin about heaven ain’t a goin there.” In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus told us that we have two choices in this life. The strait and narrow road that leads to life eternal or the broad way that leads to destruction. He also told us that not everyone who said, Lord, Lord, would enter in but only those who did the will of His Father (Mt. 7:21). Another old chorus comes to mind:

You’ve got to live forever somewhere
You’ve got to live forever somewhere
With God and the angels or the demons in hell
You’ve got to live forever somewhere

We’ve often said that there are only two kinds of people in this world: Believers and unbelievers. How blessed we are to have been given the opportunity to hear and obey the gospel. Untold masses in the world have never heard it once.

We know how the unbeliever thinks and reacts. Their eyes are blinded by the god of this world lest they should receive the gospel of Christ (2 Co. 4:4). We know because we’ve been there ourselves (Ep. 2:3).

Proverbs 16:25 ¶ There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death.

A lot of good moral people will be in hell because they choose to follow their own code of righteousness, rather than submitting to the righteousness of God. I’m reminded of an aunt who said she was just as good as some women she associated with from a local church. She would go to their social functions, but she didn’t need to go to their church, because she was better than they. That’s sad isn’t it?

The writer of Hebrews give a somber warning to all believers. Don’t treat your salvation lightly. We will not escape judgment, if we neglect it.

Hebrews 2:1 ¶  Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
2  For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
3  How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

Jesus had stern words for the church at Ephesus who left their first love and had grown lukewarm. He said He would spew them out of His mouth (Re. 3:15-18).

The apostle Paul wept over the fact that there were some in the church that were actually enemies of the cross of Christ. They would suffer destruction because their god was their belly and they minded earthly things. Surely that should be a warning to all of us (Php. 3:17-19).

The way of the cross is not easy. It calls for total self denial and absolute reliance on Jesus. The way of sin is alluring but like Moses we must choose to suffer affliction with the people of God rather than enjoy the pleasure of sins for a season (He. 11:25).

Matthew 16:24 ¶ Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Luke 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Time is fleeting. If we feel that perhaps we have 10 Years left to live, we should consider just how fast the last 10 years have sped by. Or even the last 20 years? One thing we know is that death comes to us all and judgment is certain.

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

1 Peter 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

However we have the assurance of Jesus that if we hear and believe His word, we will escape condemnation. Of course we haven’t really believed His word if we don’t obey it. If we choose to ignore His word, it will be at our own peril.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

1 John 2:25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, [even] eternal life.   John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.   1 Peter 1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

Somebody Has Said
If any occupation or association is found to hinder our communion with God or our enjoyment of spiritual things, then it must be abandoned. Anything in my habits or ways which mars happy fellowship with the brethren or robs me of power in service, is to be unsparingly judged and made an end of-- 'burned.' Whatever I cannot do for God's glory must be avoided. - A.W. Pink
