Sow to the Wind and Reap the Whirlwind

The world reacted in shock at the news of a massacre at a movie theater in Colorado. This followed the slaughter of young Jewish tourists in Bulgaria. It seems ironic or perhaps prophetic that the title of the movie was, The Dark Knight Rises. I would say that the prince of darkness (Eph. 2:20) was riding pretty high this week.

Events such as this remind us that we are living in the perilous times predicted by Jesus and the Apostle Paul. Jesus told His adversaries that they were pretty good at predicting the weather but totally unable to discern the signs of the times (Mt. 16:3).

2 Timothy 3:1 ¶  This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3  Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4  Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

In the 8th chapter of Hosea the prophet warns Israel of their coming captivity. They had turned away from God’s law and put their trust in golden calves. The Lord said that because they had sown to the wind, they would reap the whirlwind. Is this not the situation in the world today?

The Savior of the world was rejected by His own and sentenced to die on a cross of agony. His heart was broken as He looked upon those who were going about as sheep without a shepherd (Mk. 6:34). He looked our over Jerusalem and lamented of how often He would have gathered them as a hen would gather her chicks, but they would have none of it (Lu.13:34). They crucified Him instead.

The world has worshiped at the feet of the golden calves of prosperity, only to see their riches diminish. Vice and depravity is glorified while mention of the name of the Lord in prohibited. As the world continues to turn away from Almighty God, and glorifies the things of darkness, we can rest assured of one thing. We haven’t seen anything yet.

However, the call of Jesus still goes out to all who will hear.

Matthew 11:28  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Yes, sin is multiplying and the darkness is overwhelming, but we have this promise in God’s word. Where sin abounds, God’s grace abounds in greater measure.

Romans 5:20 ... But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

Just as Jesus agonized and pleaded over Israel, He even now intercedes for each and everyone of those who have professed His name. His call is still going out to any who will hear.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

God’s grace and mercy is still being extended to whomever will believe on and follow Him. Those who accept Him have the promise of being His sons (John 1:12). Tribulation and anguish is promised to those who refuse Him (Ro. 2:9).

Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him];

Hebrews 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more [shall not] we [escape], if we turn away from him that [speaketh] from heaven:

Somebody Has Said
God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing. - C. S. Lewis
