Holding Forth the Word of Life

Philippians 2:14 ¶ Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

We Christians are a different breed, aren’t we? Well, if we aren’t, that’s something we need to work on. At least, I do. Our difference from the world is not necessarily in the way we dress or in the things that we allow or disallow in our lives ( note I said “not necessarily”). Rather the question is: Are we allowing Jesus to shine through us? Are we perceived as the sons of God, or just a group of fanatics?

Paul said that we are walking in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation. However, there’s something about us that makes us stand out. We walk through this dark world as shining beacons of light. While our sinner friends and family are riding high in the pleasures of sin (He. 11:25), they may think us a bit quaint. But when they crash and are at low ebb, they remember the beacon of light that we have consistently projected. At that time we can present the Word of Life to them and they are more apt to listen.

The Word of Life: When we think of the Word of Life, perhaps we think first of our bible and some favorite scriptures come to mind and this is good.

Psalms 119:105 ¶ NUN. Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

However, the world will more readily accept our expounding of scripture, if they can see the life of Jesus ,the eternal Living Word of God, being demonstrated by our daily lives.

John 1:1,14 tells us of the Word that was in the beginning with God and was God. It was the Word which called the heavens and earth into existence (Ge. 1:3; Jn. 1:3; Co. 1:17).

God sent His Word and saved Israel from their destructions, and showed them His statutes and judgments.

Psalms 107:20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered [them] from their destructions.

Psalms 147:15 He sendeth forth his commandment [upon] earth: his word runneth very swiftly.

Psalms 147:19 He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel.

John used the Greek word Logos to define the Word of God. Logos is generally defined as the reason, thought and speech of a being. The Word which is an integral and inseparable part of God’s being, clothed Himself in human form and walked among us as a man. We know and worship Him as the Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God. In His flesh He was just as human as you and I, but in His Deity He is the One and Only Eternal God.

When Jesus talked, people listened. They said there was never a man who spoke like Him (Jn. 7:46). Others wondered what kind of man He was, that the wind and wave obeyed Him (Lu. 8:25)?

When He spoke people were healed and the devils fled (Mt. 4:24). He, speaking as a man said that His works and words were not His own but those of His Father who dwelled in Him (Jn. 14:10). Isn’t that our goal and aspiration; that our words and works not be our own but those of the Lord Jesus who dwells in us?

1 John 1:1 ¶ That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, [even] in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

The world is dying all around us and we have the answer. It is Jesus Christ who lives within us. We are a peculiar (set apart) people. We show forth the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His light, and He expects us to share His light.

1 Peter 2:9 But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

As such, Jesus considers us to be the salt of the earth. He does get displeased when we lose our saltiness. Back then, useless salt was used to pave the walkways.

Matthew 5:13 ¶ Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

He also said that we are the light of the world.

Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

Let it shine till Jesus comes, I’m gonna let it shine
Let it shine till Jesus comes, I’m gonna let it shine
Let it shine till Jesus comes, I’m gonna let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

Somebody Has Said
The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became Man for no other purpose. --C. S. Lewis
