About-Him Devotional 12-04-2004

I've always been intrigued by the incarnation of God in Christ more then any subject in the bible. The Old Testament saints had a glimmer and expressed that hope quite vividly. The prophesies point to the One who would take flesh and bear our sins. Along that line of thinking is the article below, which I found to be quite moving, written by my friend, Ron Lennex.

God’s weakness…Ron Lennex...11-30-04

Much is said about God’s strength… but what about His weakness?

When you hear the phrase “Almighty God”, what do you think of? Does it conjure up thoughts of an all-powerful being that shows no weaknesses or vulnerabilities? Does it bring up ideas of thundering and light flashing around a huge, brilliant Throne? Does it make you think God is impenetrable, unapproachable, or insensitive?

The Bible teaches that God has all power in heaven and in earth, and, of course, because it is written in His word, and most of us have experienced His Power manifested in our lives, we know He does indeed have all power.

But does the Bible say He is absolutely without weakness? Does the Bible tell us that God has no vulnerability, none at all?

You can call me sacrilegious if you’d like, but I think He does. I believe God has one very big weakness, and I believe He is very vulnerable in one area.

John 3:16-17 NASB "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. (17) For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.”

1 John 4:9-10 NASB “By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. (10) In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

Unfortunately, I’m not a father yet, but I have already tasted the vulnerability that is inside me for children. All that most kids have to do is look at me with a sad look on their face and I instantly melt inside. Immediately, I want to reach out and scoop them up to comfort them. I can only imagine how weak and sappy I would be when my wife and I finally do start having children of our own. I’ll be ruined, I’m sure of it. One ‘puppy-dog’ look and a few little tears after they fall on their rump as they learn to walk, and it’ll all be over. Daddy will melt and quicker than you can blink your eye, reach down to pick them up and hold them close and try to make it better.

I believe that’s how God looked at us before He ever spoke the words that set everything in motion. Before He ever uttered, “Let there be light”, His vulnerability toward us caused Him to come up with a plan to draw us unto Himself. He knew what would happen, and knew what it would take to make things right, and yet, He didn’t back down. He pushed ahead and set everything in its place,  and breathed the breath of life into Adam’s nostrils.

What would cause the Almighty God of all that is seen and unseen to humble Himself in order to stoop down and bridge the gap between mankind and Himself by becoming a mere man in order to loose the chains that held us in bondage for so long?

What would cause the Creator to take on the form of the created, subject Himself to mocking, beating, and tortures untold, just to redeem His creation from the gigantic mess they had made?

What would drive Him to this extremity?

Weakness… and Vulnerability…

It’s the same weakness and vulnerability that drives you to do what you do for your children, only greater.

It’s the same weakness that causes you to crave the company of your help meet, only more intense.

You,  are God’s weakness. __________________ God Bless ya REAL Good...

A friend told of how he was required to fill out consent forms at his doctor's office, for which the desk person  loaned him a pen.

The pen featured an ad for a local funeral home with the message, "Christian Memorial Services." Does this doctor lack self-confidence, or what?   Purple text

Somebody Has Said
"One hundred religious persons knit into a unity by careful organization do not constitute a church any more than eleven dead men make a football team.  The first requisite is life, always." - A.W. Tozer
