Expressing Our Love to Jesus

Well, Valentine’s day is coming up. I found that it was named for  several priests named Valentine who were martyred in the post apostolic age. In the late middle ages these facts were embellished  to include romantic love, best expressed by sending flowers. Better yet, why not add a fancy greeting card and a big box of candy and other gifts as we express our love to our spouses. I trust that we express our love to the Lord with equal fervor. I believe Jesus would be thrilled to hear us sing this old chorus.

O how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus
O how I love Jesus, because He first loved me

A famous theologian was asked to give a statement that summed up his beliefs. He gave a simple yet profound answer:

Jesus loves me, this I know because the bible tells me so.

In Deuteronomy 7:6-7, the Lord reminds Israel that he had chosen them above all the other people of the earth to be special unto Him. It wasn’t because they were high and mighty or had established a noble culture, because they were nomads whom He had just delivered from Egypt. It was simply because that God by His sovereign will chose to set His love upon them.

1 John 3:1 ¶ Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

God bestowed His love upon us. We didn’t deserve it and we can’t do anything to earn it. We can’t do anything to make Him love us less, nor can we do anything to make Him love us more. He has shown His love toward us by adopting us into His family and calling us His sons. Being sons of God, we have been made joint heirs with Jesus of all the riches of heaven. Why? Why me? I don’t know!

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

Jesus proved His love for us by laying down His life. He didn’t have to, but it was determined in eternity past that He would. Our names were already written in the book of life, but we still had to be purchased by God’s own blood (Acts 20:28). Love doesn’t get any deeper than this.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.
We were commanded to love God with all of our heart soul and strength (De. 6:5; Mt 22:37), but try as we might, because of our bondage to sin, this proved to be impossible.  Until, Jesus broke the fetters of sin and set us free.

1 John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

We live through Him. Jesus lives in us and uses us to show His love to a lost and dying world.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

1 John 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

We live in a hurting and twisted world. We meet people everyday who need to hear the message that Jesus loved them. Sometimes that message can be conveyed better by our deeds, rather than our words.

Because we have confessed the name of the Lord and have set our love upon Him, we have His promise of being delivered and set on high.

Psalms 91:14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

So sing with me, please.

Yes Jesus loves me, Yes Jesus loves me Yes Jesus loves me, The bible tells me so

Somebody Has Said
"Avoid a sugared gospel as you would shun sugar of lead. Seek the gospel which rips up and tears and cuts and wounds and hacks and even kills, for that is the gospel that makes alive again. And when you have found it, give good heed to it. Let it enter into your inmost being. As the rain soaks into the ground, so pray the Lord to let his gospel soak into your soul." Charles Haddon Spurgeon
