By Faith Moses Made a Choice

 Hebrews 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw [he was] a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

We all know the story of how Moses was hidden by his parents in the bulrushes of the Nile. Because of their faith they found a way to escape the cruel edict of Pharaoh. Their faith caused them to be inventive and moved to action.   While other parents suffered the loss of their children, the faith based action of Moses’ parents in preparing an ark, affected all of mankind from that time on. When we believe God and operate in the faith that He has given us, we simply don’t know the effect that our actions may have on the generations that follow us.

Hebrews 11:24  By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;

After being rescued by Pharaoh’s daughter, the providence of God determined that Moses’ own mother would be employed as his nurse. As this child was being raised in the household of Pharaoh which believed in many gods, he was being taught by a faithful mother of the one true God. When Moses became of age, he remembered the teachings of of his mother.  Proverbs 22:6 tells us that if we train up a child in the way he should go, he will not depart from that teaching when he is old.

25  Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

Moses acted in faith and renounced his ties to Pharaoh’s daughter. I’m sure that Moses had a great deal of personal conflict and struggle in coming to his decision. On the one hand was the culture and riches of Egypt as well as political prestige and position that came with being a member of Pharaoh’s household. On the other hand was the teachings of his faithful mother. While he had yet to have a personal encounter with God (Exodus 3) there was a seed of faith that had been planted in his heart that caused him to make the decision that he did.

26  Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

Moses weighed the consequences of the actions that he was about to take. I’m sure that this was a great crisis in his life, but: he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. In other words, he counted the cost.

He knew that in the final analysis, the eternal rewards were far greater than anything that Egypt had to offer. Christians are not offered a bed of roses. We in the western world are rather immune from suffering for the cause of Christ. Not so in much of the rest of the world. In some places it can mean torture and imprisonment, confiscation of children and property and death. All for the privilege of saying in faith that I’ve considered the end result and I have respect unto the recompence of the reward.

27  By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

The faith of Moses was tested and tried during his forty years of exile because of his rash actions in slaying an Egyptian. During this time when he felt alone and abandoned, he had an encounter with Almighty God who spoke from the bush and identified Himself as I AM THAT I AM. After that he never looked back. He had met God at the burning bush, but he endured because his faith told him that there were greater things to come.

28  Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

By faith, Moses and the Israelites kept the detailed instructions of the Passover. He obeyed in placing the blood covering over the doorways of each house, thus escaping the death angel. If we are to escape God’s wrath we have a shelter under His blood (Acts 20:28). We do our best to keep all of God’s word, knowing that He is a God of goodness  as well as a God of severity (Romans 11:22). If we by faith respect and honor His word, we won’t have to fear His severity. We will rejoice in His goodness.

29  By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.

It all started by faith when an anguished mother hid her baby in the bulrushes, and it grew from there, just as Jesus spoke of faith the size of a mustard seed growing into a great tree (Luke 13;19). We simply don’t know how big our simple acts of faith may grow.

Israel passed through the Red Sea to deliverance. We, by faith are doing the same.  Our final goal and destination: Heaven, where we will see Jesus face to face and have all tears wiped from our eyes (Revelation 21:4) . We will hear Him say, Enter in thou good and faithful servant (Matthew 25:23).

Humor
Tom had won a toy at a raffle. He called his kids together to ask which one should have the present.

"Who is the most obedient?" he asked. "Who never talks back to mother? Who does everything she says?"

Five small voices answered in unison: "Okay, Dad, you get the toy."

"Faith, as Paul saw it, was a living, flaming thing leading to surrender and obedience to the commandments of Christ." -  A.W. Tozer
