A Shelter in the Time of Storm

Isaiah 4:6 And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.

Isaiah 32:2 And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

We used to sing this  old chorus that obviously refers to the text above.

Jesus is a Rock in a weary land, a weary land, a weary land.
Jesus is a Rock in a weary land, a shelter in the time of storm

Isaiah wrote that a man would be as a hiding place from the wind and a shelter in the time of storm. He wasn’t speaking of just any man. He was speaking of God incarnate, the man Christ Jesus (Isa. 9:6, 1Cor. 12:6, 1Tim. 3:16). We know that the wind is indeed blowing, both literally and spiritually. I read this morning that there was a straight line wind in Mississippi of 106 mph. Rather unusual I’d say. It does seem that these type of events, such as earthquakes and tsunamis are getting very commonplace. Unusual weather patterns are no longer unusual, they are becoming the norm. Perhaps Somebody is trying to tell us something? I try my best to avoid politics in this devotional, but sometimes its just not possible. People of all political persuasions are becoming fearful and bewildered and wondering what is going to happen next. Well, the answers are found in the word of God.

The Winds of War are blowing: All at once, much of the mid-east world is in revolt against their oppressive rulers, because they desire democracy? That sounds fishy to me. I think somebody is stirring the pot. At present, our world leaders are banded together in an effort to bomb Libya into submission, while ignoring the other nations who are just as repressive as Libya. I guess it boils down to who has the most oil? I don’t have the gift of prophecy, but it’s not too hard to predict that before long these nations that are in revolt will be all banded together in a government that is opposed to the Christian gospel and the Jews of the world.  When world leaders band together, I instinctively  think of Psalms 2:2 where the kings of the earth have taken counsel against the Lord and His Anointed, desiring to break their bands asunder. We have the assurance my friend that this will never happen (Ps. 2:2). I wouldn’t be messing with the Lord’s anointed.

Psalms 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

There is a day of reckoning coming for all the movers and shakers of this world who oppose the kingdom of God.

Revelation 6:15  And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16  And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17  For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Winds of Economic Collapse: It is very apparent that the economies of the world are on shaky ground. At present the U.S. is fighting two wars on credit and is flirting with another. The states are broke and we are faced with massive unemployment and folks who have put all that they have into their homes, have seen them repossessed by the banks.

Revelation 6:6 gives us a picture of what’s coming: At some point, it will cost a day’s wages for our daily bread, yet others will be flush with oil and wine. Oil and wine is a metaphor for sumptuous living.

Revelation 6:6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and [see] thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

Winds of social changes: I saw a video clip on the internet concerning the TV program Glee where two members of the same sex engaged in a kiss. The commentators in the clip were chastising a certain  celebrity who expressed herself that the kiss was disgusting. They felt that young children should know that it’s okay to be gay.

Winds of apostasy: Many polls have been taken of theological schools and many denominations that deny the Divinity of Jesus, His virgin birth and bodily resurrection as well as His ascension to heaven. Scripture tells us that before Jesus comes again, there would be a great falling away (2Th. 2:3).

On a  positive note!

Jesus Christ is alive and well and seated on the throne of heaven (Ro. 8:34). He is the One who was promised as a hiding place from the wind and a shelter from the tempest. He has issued an invitation to all who are weary and heavy laden.

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

1Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

At His ascension, He told his disciples that all power of heaven and earth had been given to Him. Therefore or because He held all power, we were to go forth and make disciples in all nations. Then He said, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen (Mt. 28:18-20).”

Because He Lives, I Can Face Tomorrow.
Because He Lives, All Fear is Gone
Because I Know He Holds the Future
And Life is Worth the Living, Just Because He Lives

The disciples were living in times just as perilous or more so than today, yet they obeyed the commands of the Great Commission. They had no regard for life or property. Their only desire was to advance the kingdom of God. They had all things common and even sold their lands and laid the money at the apostle’s feet (Acts 4:32).

Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with [them], and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

Jesus has promised to be with us until the end of the world. His desire for us, regardless of what condition we find ourselves in, is to tell the good news of the gospel that:

….. Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
47  And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24:46
