Capturing  Every Thought to the Obedience of Christ

2Corinthians 10: 4  (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
The context of the above scripture is that the apostle Paul is answering some, who in an effort to elevate themselves, have attacked his own apostleship. Some accused him of living in the flesh. He replied that yes, he necessarily lived in the flesh as we all do, but that he did not conduct spiritual warfare by fleshly methods, but by the Spirit of God.

Although our circumstances and situations may be different than those of the apostle, we are facing the same enemy, whose only objective is to oppose and destroy the saints of God (Jn. 10:10).

5a.  Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God,

The biggest battle for us as Christians takes place right between our ears, in our minds. Don’t answer but, have you ever built a case in your mind against someone or something that later proved to be  totally false?  Sometimes we can be affected by smooth talkers who manipulate the word of God. But when we examine such things in the light of God’s word, we cast these thoughts down as evil imaginations.

5b. and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Bringing every thought to the obedience of Christ. That’s a big order isn’t it? The word “bringing” is an active verb which suggest a continual ongoing process. Everyday we examine ourselves before our Savior and we cast out every thought that is contrary to God’s word. Our minds  are constantly under bombardment by stimuli that is contrary to God’s word. Much of this stimuli is unavoidable, but we can avoid a lot of it, if we want to. The computer term gigo comes to mind, garbage in garbage out.

Some thoughts that we should put in our spiritual trash cans:

Thoughts of self importance, elevation, entitlement  and glorification.

Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think [of himself] more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Luke 14:11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Thoughts of getting even with those who have wronged us.

Romans 12:14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

Romans 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but [rather] give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance [is] mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Any thought that takes away from the absolute Deity and Lordship of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1Corinthians 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

Jude 1:25 To the only wise God our Saviour, [be] glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Our battleground is in our mind, but we have control of what we harbor there. We can fill our minds with the things of the world that are contrary to the word of God, or we can put on the mind of Christ. He lived a perfect sinless life and set the perfect example for us, ultimately shedding His life’s blood to give us salvation and eternal life.

Philippians  2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

As we said earlier: Garbage in, garbage out, but there is an alternative.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.

Colossians 3:16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Psalms 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
Somebody Has Said
Some people like to read so many bible chapters every day. I would not dissuade them from the practice, but I would rather lay my soul asoak in half a dozen verses all day than rinse my hand in several chapters. Oh, to be bathed in a text of Scripture, and to let it be sucked up in your very soul, till it saturates your heart! --Charles Haddon Spurgeon
