While thinking this week on what the scripture tells us about true humility, I kept recalling this old song that we sang quite often in the little church of my youth. Just as a stream finds a bed that is lowly So Jesus walks with the meek and the holy Cast out thy pride, and in heartfelt contrition Humble thyself to walk with God. Humble thyself and the Lord will walk with thee Humble thyself and His presence will cheer thee He will not walk with the proud or the scornful Humble thyself to walk with God After beholding the Lord’s creation, the Psalmist asked the question, “What is man that thou art mindful of Him and the son of man that you visit Him (Ps. 8:4)? He continues that God has crowned us with glory and honor and given us dominion over all things. Unfortunately, we sometimes forget that our gifts and abilities are imparted from God to each one as God Himself determines (1Cor. 12:11). It has been said that our earth is just a speck among all of God’s universe and that we among the billions of people, past and present, who have lived here are just a speck upon that speck. And yet He loves us and chooses to live in and commune with us. Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name [is] Holy; I dwell in the high and holy [place], with him also [that is] of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Do you remember the story of the Pharisee who boasted before God of all his good works. Surely God must be impressed with his devotion. He paid his tithes and fasted twice a week. I’m sure that he like other Pharisees was good at long and loud pretentious prayers, all to be seen of men (Mt. 6:5, 23:5). Most of all, he reminded God, he wasn’t like that publican who was praying nearby. The publican’s prayer was simply, God be merciful to me, a sinner (Lu. 18:10-14). Luke 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Psalms 138:6 tells us that, “ …. the proud he knoweth afar off.” Isaiah 2:17 reminds us that, “… the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.” As the song above states, “God will not walk with the proud and the scornful,” but the apostle James gives us the key: James 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Voltaire expected that within fifty years of his lifetime there would not be one Bible in the world. His house is now a distribution center for Bibles in many languages. - Corrie Ten Boom Free Ebooks That You Can Download.
