The Word is Alive and Powerful

1Thessalonians 2:13 ¶ For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received [it] not [as] the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

We wrote last week that the word of God was inspired and alive. It is more than printed words on a page, it conveys the very, heart, mind and will of the eternal God, who clothed Himself in flesh and walked among us in the face and person of Jesus Christ. Jesus, the eternal Word incarnate, told us that His words were spirit and life (Jn. 6:63). We see a demonstration of this in the 1Thessalonians.

Paul had preached there in the Jewish synagogue with a small amount of success. His main success was with the gentile Greek population, who had been idol worshipers, but were converted at the words of Paul, Timothy and Silvanus. They suffered continual persecution as a result, but they never wavered from their new found faith.

1Thessalonians 1:5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

Paul presented the gospel and God confirmed His word just as He did in Mk. 16:20 where the disciples went everywhere preaching the word and the Lord confirming His word with signs following (Mr. 16:20). These men probably were relatively unlearned, but they spoke the word with an unction from within. I doubt very much if any of them ever preached from a prepared text. They like the early apostles simply rehearsed what they had seen and heard (Acts 4:5). They were able ministers of the new testament, not of the letter that kills, but of the Spirit that gives life (2Cor. 2:16).

Paul preached the word to the Thessalonians and God opened their hearts to receive, unlike their Jewish neighbors who were no doubt had a greater knowledge of the things of God, but their hearts were not open to the truth. Without the Spirit, we preach all day and labor endlessly with little to show for it, but the anointing of the Spirit confirming His word makes all the difference in the world.

Our job is to simply preach the gospel; the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ and to rely on God for the increase (ICor. 3:6). People would rather hear the gospel of greed, rather than the gospel of the cross, but if we corrupt our preaching with things designed to tickle the ears of the listener (Isa. 30:10), we do them a disservice and will perhaps damn our own souls.

The apostle Paul said, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek (Romans 1:16). He said that his preaching of the word was complained by mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God…….(Ro. 15:9). That his speech and preaching [was] not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that the people’s faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. (1:Cor. 2:4-5). Paul did not rely on the carnal weapons of this flesh to preach, but rather on the weapons of the Spirit that were able to tear down strongholds (2Cor. 10:4).

While rejoicing over the Thessalonians’ steadfastness in the faith, Paul reminded them that he preached while enduring persecution and that his preaching was not of deceit, uncleanness, or guile. Nor did he use flattering words as a cloke of covetousness. Paul didn’t speak to please men, but rather God who had entrusted him with the gospel (1Th. 2:1-6).

1Corinthians 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

2Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

Philippians 2:16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

We have learned to live with unholiness and have come to look upon it as the natural and expected thing. - A.W. Tozer
