The Cross of Jesus

Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

The cross of Jesus is the focal point of all time and eternity. Our English word cross comes from the Latin word crux. We often say that the crux of the matter is such and such, referring to the point that we believe is important above all others. I believe that the Cross of Jesus Christ is the crux of all history and existence. In the bible, God predicted the cross in the garden of Eden, and all Old Testament scripture points forward to it. All New Testament scripture points back to the cross. At the end of the age, when all the redeemed are gathered at the throne of God, endless praises will be extended to Jesus, because of His cross.

Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

It was at the Cross that God provided the perfect sacrifice for sin. There that He bore the penalty for sin that He Himself had prescribed (Eze.18:4).Theoretically, perhaps, if a perfect man could have been found, who was willing to bear my sin, his sacrifice might have been sufficient. However, no such man could be found. God said that he looked, but He couldn't find anyone.

Isaiah 59:16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.

There are a lot of good people in the bible, but no perfect ones. When an atonement for sin and reconciliation to God is at stake, good is not good enough. Perfection was demanded and because no perfect man could be found, God Himself supplied the necessary sacrifice and purchased our salvation with His Own blood.

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Hebrews 13:12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

The apostle Paul asks us to take notice that God was in Christ, and He reconciled us to Himself by the cross of Jesus. He also has given to believers "the word of reconciliation."

II Corinthians 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

It is with this in mind that we ask you to consider the cross of Jesus and how you have applied it to your life. As Paul said, We ask you, we plead with you, we beg you, be ye reconciled to God. Our eternal destiny depends on how we treat the subject.

II Corinthians 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

To those who reject God, the cross is utter foolishness, but to us it is the power of God. If you embrace the cross, immediately you will be considered irrational, unscientific, uneducated, ignorant and unwashed. You will also be considered a part of that vast populace who can't think for themselves, otherwise known as the "religious right," whatever that is.

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Paul said he would glory in nothing but the cross. What are some of the things we glory in?

Self: The biggest hindrance to serving God is self. Jesus simply asks us to deny ourselves and get lost in Him. In fact it is an absolute requirement for salvation.

Matthew 16: 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Possessions: There was a very rich man in scripture who said to his soul, "Take thine ease." God had other plans for him. His possessions could do him no good.

Luke 12:20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

Social position, man's wisdom, traditions and philosophy: Our great wisdom and learning, even the ability to go to the moon is utter foolishness with God. In fact, our great knowledge can lead to our own destruction.

1Corinthians 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

The highly educated apostle Paul counted all of his learning as nothing. He simply states that the preaching of the cross is our only salvation. Nothing else matters. When we embrace the cross, we embrace the power and wisdom of God.

1 Corinthians 1: 18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

We were reconciled to God by the cross.

Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by thr blood of Christ.
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

God took away the ordinances that were contrary to us at the cross.

Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

God triumphed over the evil realm at the cross.

Paul gives us a picture of a defeated foe being displayed in open shame. This is what Jesus did to Satan, by His cross. He paraded Satan as a defeated foe who can render us no further harm. All because of the cross.

Colossians 2:15 [And] having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Provision was made at the cross for my physical and mental health.

Isaiah 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

We will all bow and confess to God that He is Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. His nailed scarred hands and riven side will be displayed and brought to remembrance. Some will wail and some will rejoice.

Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they [also] which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

Isaiah 45:23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth [in] righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

Philippians 2:10 -11 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

God's judgment is certain and pending. Men of every station in life will try to hide themselves from the face of the One who bore their sin. They will then remember that the wrath of God was promised to those who refused His sacrifice. They will suddenly remember His cross.

Revelation 6:15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

The elements will burn with fervent heat.

2Peter 3: 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

We used to sing the song, "Where Will I Be, When the great Trumpet Sounds?" This is a good question to ask ourselves. If we have denied ourselves and embraced the cross of Jesus, we will have no fear. If we have rejected and put off being reconciled to God by the cross of Jesus we will be subject to God's wrath.

The only way to save your life is to lose it in the cross.

Mark 8:35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. 36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Only you can assess your relationship to Jesus. Only you know if you have fully accepted His provision for your salvation. If you have not, we beg of you, "Be reconciled unto God!" Jesus is calling and pleading. He has given absolute promises and assurance of acceptance, if we will only come to Him and accept His sacrifice for us.

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

He loves you, He died for you, He's listening for your simple cry.

Somebody Has Said
"One hundred religious persons knit into a unity by careful organizations do not constitute a church any more than eleven dead men make a football team. The first requisite is life, always." - A. W. Tozer
