Jeremiah 8:15 We looked for peace, but no good [came; and] for a time of health, and behold trouble! The prophet Jeremiah functioned in Judah prior to the Babylonian captivity. Jeremiah bemoans the fact that the people are perpetual backsliders. He describes them as having no repentance of their evil deeds and cannot blush when they commit abomination. The people were constantly looking for peace, but they never found it, because they wanted peace on their terms, rather than the peace that the Lord provides. I live in Las Vegas where the moniker “Sin City” in actively advertised and promoted. One billboard I’ve noticed promotes a night club as “A New Place to Sin.” I’m sure that the Lord takes notice. We just had the 2010 U.S. midterm elections. I can’t help but notice the parallels between the U.S. and ancient Judah. Our country and our government have taken God completely out of the picture. He can’t be mentioned in government or in our schools. His laws are totally ignored, yet we cry for peace. We foolishly assume that one party or the other has the answer to all of our ills; then we can continue in our rebellion towards our Creator. It has been said that if we keep doing the same old thing in the same old way, we can expect the same old result. The only time a politician mentions God is when they close a speech with the phrase, “God bless you and God bless America.“ Of course the generic term god is safe to use because it can be applied to any number of so-called deities. How about getting a bit more specific and call God by His name, Jesus? To shut Him out of our daily policy deliberation and then invoke His blessing is nothing short of mockery, and God will not be mocked (Gal. 6:7). There has never been peace in this world, nor will there ever be, outside of the peace provided by Jesus Christ. Jesus gives a peace that is beyond understanding. He told us to not fear because that His peace was different than anything that the world has to offer. Yes, we will still have tribulation in this world (Jn. 16:33), but we have the consolation that He has already overcome the world. Psalms 85:8 ¶ I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly. Perhaps it is time to listen to what the Lord has to say. Just as He said “Peace be still” to the raging sea (Mk. 4:39, He speaks peace to those who have placed their faith in Him and Him alone. 2Corinthians 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Romans 5:1 ¶ Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: The years are rolling by fast, but we have peace of mind, because we know that our sins have been washed by the blood of Jesus and that when we stand before Christ at the appointed day of judgment (Heb. 9:27) , our salvation will be assured, if we have met Him in repentance and received the peace that only He can offer. Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. An old chorus combination comes to mind. Without Him, I would be nothing, Without Him I would but fail Without Him, I would be drifting, like a ship without a sail Jesus, Oh Jesus, Do you know Him today, please don’t turn Him away Jesus, Oh Jesus, without Him, how lost I would be If God gives you a watch, are you honoring Him more by asking Him what time it is, or by simply looking at the watch? - A.W.
