Beware of False Prophets

Text: 2Peter 2:1 ¶  But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

Last week we mentioned that the Old Testament prophesies came as holy men of God were moved by the Holy Ghost. Along with these holy men there were men such as Balaam who was basically a prophet for hire (2Peter 2:15-16). Peter warns us that there will be false teachers among us also.

There are over 30,000 Christian denominations in the world today and they don’t all speak with the same voice, do they? Peter warns that there would be damnable heresies to the point of denying the very Lord who purchased their salvation by shedding His blood on Calvary.

First of all the bible is under attack as being the inspired word of God and reduced to being an allegory. Eden is a myth and Noah’s ark is just an interesting story. The virgin birth , the deity of Jesus and His resurrection were just concoctions that were used to get the new Christian movement under way. The authority of the apostolic writers is  questioned while spurious and questionable writings are given equal weight. I’m always amazed when I watch a program on the History Channel that is based on the bible. The high brow professors of religion trip all over themselves in an effort to debunk the bible.

2Timothy 4:4 And they shall turn away [their] ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

One denomination has it’s own  translation of the bible. They make John 1:1 to read that the eternal Word that was in the beginning was not God but, “a god.” Do I need to read any further?

Another has three other of their own publications that they hold to be equal to the bible. One of these books was supposedly translated from golden plates at the direction of an angel? Well, the apostle Paul said that that angel should be cursed if he preached anything other than the gospel i.e. the death, burial, resurrection and abiding presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Galatians 1:8  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed .
9  As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Text: 2Peter 2:2  And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

Isaiah 30:10 Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

Text: 2Peter 2:3 ¶  And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

There have always been frauds , who because of covetousness have used the gospel to separate folks from their money.  False prophesies and counterfeit miracles are their biggest tools. However, their victims are often guilty of the same covetousness, when they try to buy the blessings of God. Healing is part of God’s word. It’s free, purchased by Jesus on Calvary. We don’t have to pay for it. Likewise, salvation was freely purchased on the cross.

2Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

It is amazing, that there are many who call themselves Christian preachers, who deny the core doctrines of Christianity, such as the resurrection. The pulpit is used to bring about social change rather than hearts changed by the power of God.

I wonder what Jesus thinks of  men denying His sacrifice on  Calvary and scoffing at his Resurrection? I wonder what He thinks when the church can’t be distinguished form the world?  I really don’t have to wonder, do I? I can read His words to the seven churches of Asia and His appeal for repentance.

Ephesus was going through the motions but they had lost their first love. Smyrna was a suffering church, and didn’t come under condemnation. Pergamum was a compromising church. Thyatira was condemned for sexual sin and idolarty. Sardis was Christian in name only. Philadelphia was commended for their patience and endurance in keeping the commands of Jesus. Lastly there was Laodicea, the lukewarm church. They thought themselves to be rich and in need of nothing. Unfortunately, Jesus thought otherwise.

These seven churches typify conditions that are prevalent in the Christian churches today. It’s easy to look around at church conditions and criticize and condemn, and rightly so. However, I need to examine myself and make sure that I’m not as guilty as those I condemn.

The big question is: What does Jesus think of me? If I faced Him in judgment today, how would I fare?

Lamentations  3:40 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.

Psalms 26:2 Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart

1Corinthians 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of [that] bread, and drink of [that] cup.

2Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

Galatians 6:4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

Somebody Has Said

We believe that God is present everywhere, and the eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the good and the bad.... We must therefore consider how we should behave in the sight of Divine Majesty, and as we sing our psalms let us see to it that our mind is in harmony with our voice. - Benedict of Nursia
