The Definition of Faith

Last week we covered the preamble to the eleventh  chapter of Hebrews, know as the faith chapter, which tells us that the just or righteous must live by faith. Faith in who Jesus is and faith in what He has done on our behalf.

We now come to the definition of faith:

Hebrews 11:1 ¶  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

The NAS translation renders this as the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen.

I like to think of faith as simple confidence in God. For example: When we travel over interstate bridges, we don’t stop and examine each structure  and agonize as to whether or not their  designer knew what he was doing. No, we show confidence by zooming on over at 70 miles per hour. Certainly we can have the same and greater confidence in our Creator, who knew us before we were ever conceived from the womb, and who stated that He only had good thoughts  toward us (Jeremiah 29:11).

Another example is the willingness of a small child to jump into his/her parent’s arms knowing that mother or father will not drop them. They don’t give it a second thought, they just jump and then laugh.

Certainly we should have the same confidence in our heavenly Father.

Matthew 6:30  Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
I John 5:14 ¶  And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15  And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Faith is not automatic. It comes from our hearing the word of God and how we respond to it.

Romans  10:17 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

The NIV states this as, "faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the word of Jesus Christ."

We remember The  Parable of the Sower http://about-him.com/devotion/devxxx10-11-03.html     (Matthew. 13:3-9,18-23; Mark. 4:3-20; Luke 8:4-15). The sower went out to sow the seed, which was the word of God. All the fruit that brought forth salvation was in proportion to the person’s response and preparation for receiving the word.

John, when summing up his gospel stated in John 20:31 that "these are written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that believing you might have life through His name." He also stated that this ( his writings) is the record that God had given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son (I John 5:10). So, when we read the record of the life and teachings of Christ, faith is quickened in our hearts by the Holy Ghost as the Lord draws us to Himself.

Some folks seem to make an idol of faith, using their prosperity as a measure of their faith.  It seems to me that they have faith in their faith, rather than faith in Jesus.

When  we read and hear the simple gospel of Christ, our faith is quickened. We then have confidence in God, that we can ask and receive the things that supply our needs, glorifies God and advances His kingdom.

By faith we obey his commandment such as water baptism in His name and by faith we are filled with God’s Holy Spirit (Galatians 3:2), as promised in Acts 2:39. As we walk by faith with Jesus, our faith will be ever increasing.

Two rabbits were being chased by a pack of wolves. The wolves chased the rabbits into a thicket. After a few minutes, one rabbit turned to the other and said,   "Well, do you want to make a run for it or stay here a few days and out number them?"
Somebody Has Said
"When you have no helpers, see your helpers in God. When you have many helpers, see God in all your helpers. When you have nothing but God, see all in God. When you have everything, see God in everything. Under all conditions, stay thy heart only on the Lord." - Charles Charles
