A Word in Season 5 The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. This is a prophesy of the Lord Jesus. He was subject to human limitations, the same as we, but He relied totally on the Spirit of God, as we aspire to do. Each morning as He awoke from sleep the Spirit planted a word into His mind. He said that the Lord had opened His ear and He was not rebellious. How many times have we awakened with a thought on our minds and felt the urge to pray, but soon found something else to do and delayed the prayer. Then because of our rebellion, the thought had fled from us? I plead guilty. Words abound, but words in season are more rare. Solomon said that to the making of books there is no end (Ecclesiastes 12:12). Millions of words in books on every subject under the sun. If we don’t feel like reading a book, we can just go to Google and find thousands of words on any subject we desire. However, the words we get from books and the internet are not always reliable. Often, they are conflicting words. Sadly, the words that people receive from Christians can also be conflicting at times. Rhetoric abounds, but often it is empty. Orators can often stir the emotions for a moment, and then the emptiness returns. We find ourselves stirred but not changed. In contrast, the words of Jesus penetrate to the good ground of the heart and produce life changing fruit (Matthew 13:8). A few seasoned words under the unction and direction of the Spirit of God will always have effect. God said that His words would not fall to the ground (I Samuel 3:19) and that they would not return to Him void (Isaiah 55:11). Jesus always spoke words of encouragement. His fellow town folk wondered how such gracious words could come from the mouth of the local carpenter’s son (Luke 4:22). Other folks marveled at His doctrine, because He spoke with authority, unlike the scribes and Pharisees. He stirred a local synagogue when he stood to read Isaiah and proclaimed the that the Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, to open the blinded eyes and to proclaim liberty to the captive (Luke 4:16-22). The reaction of others was, "Never a man spake like this man" (John 7:46) and that His word was with power (Luke 4:32). He had every right to condemn the woman taken in adultery, but He chose to give her life by saying, "Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more" (John 8:11). He met a women at a well in Samaria who had a shady past. Jesus promised her the life of the Spirit (John 4:4-26). In fact He said that His words were Spirit and life (John 6:63). The words of Jesus are always reliable and never conflicting. We have been commissioned to hold forth the word of life (Philippians 2:16) and to preach the word, being instant in season and out of season (II Timothy 4:2). Everywhere we go we are surrounded by hurting and confused people who don’t know which way to turn. They’ve tried all the words of the world as they followed the latest fad and fancy. Those words were empty and led to failure and disappointment . These people are still searching and are weary. When they come to our churches, they don’t need a motivational seminar. Nor do they need a primer on how to obtain the riches of this world, they need words in season. They need the gospel that says "Thus it behooved Christ to suffer and to raise the third day and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name" (Luke 24:46-47). They need the words of Jesus. Such as: He that comes to me, I will never cast out (John 6:37). Whosoever will, let him come and drink of the waters of life freely (Revelation 22:17). If a man will open the door, I will come in and sup with him and he with Me (Revelation 3:20). The apostle Paul tells us that the word is nigh us even in our mouths. It is this word that leads us to salvation. Romans 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, [even] in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Paul also said that he didn’t come with the enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in the power and demonstration of the Spirit (I Corinthians 2:4). Romans 1:16 ¶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. The same Spirit that gave Jesus the tongue of the learned is available to us today. He will supply us the words that we need in the season that we need them, so that the weary ones can come to Him.
