An Offer We Can't Refuse

An offer that can’t be refused? Sounds like something from a gangster movie, or from a TV pitchman? Well, it’s neither. It is an offer from the Lord Jesus Christ, extended to all who desire peace for their soul and the assurance that when they leave this life , they will live with Him eternally.

Matthew 11:28  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Looking back over Matthew 11 to get the context, we see that Jesus was dismayed when John the Baptist expressed doubt and confusion as to whether or not He was the Messiah. John had sent messengers enquiring, “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? I’m sure that Jesus was perplexed. John, whom Isaiah had prophesied to be  the Forerunner of the Lord, had announced Jesus as the Holy Ghost Baptizer (Mt. 3:11).  When he baptized Jesus in water, He heard the voice of God from heaven saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him (Mt. 17:5).” Had John forgotten this? Do we often forget? Jesus told the messengers whom John had sent to tell him what they were hearing and seeing: “The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them (Isa. 42:7; Lu. 4:18).”

John was in prison awaiting execution and no doubt was in a fit of despair and depression. He had been rough and forceful and had caused to whole nation to come to repentance, however the religious fervor had worn off. He perhaps had expected Jesus to establish His kingdom by force. Jesus on the other hand was the meek and mild Servant of the Lord (Isa. 42;1-4).

Then Jesus added an admonition for John that is still fitting for all of us, “Blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” Things don’t always work out as we had planned, but our faith is in Him. He sets the agenda, not us.

Jesus was perplexed by the Jewish nation. They were like children playing in the streets, who soon tired of their games. John had come as an a very rough and plain may who didn’t drink wine or eat fancy food, and they accused him of having a devil. Jesus came eating and drinking and they accused Him of being a winebibber and a glutton. It’s obvious that they didn’t want to receive either one because if they did their way of life would have to change. Pretty much the same situation today, eh?

Jesus began to upbraid the cities of Chorizin and  Bethsaida. They had seen His mighty miracles, but still would not believe. Had Sodom, Tyre or Sidon seen the same works, they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes. Jesus said that it would be more tolerable for these heathen cities in the judgment, that for Chorizin and  Bethsaida who had rejected His gospel. In light of this, I wonder how the countries of the world, including the U.S.A. will stand at the day of judgment?

Jesus then prayed to His Father and thanked Him for hiding the gospel from the high and mighty and revealing it to babes (Lu. 18:17). He affirmed that all things had been delivered into His hands (comp. Mt. 28:18, Col. 1:19). Jesus reiterated His oneness with the Father (Jn. 10:30,14:9). He stated that no man could know the Father, except He had been revealed to them by Jesus Himself (Jn. 14;6).

Jesus then issued an invitation for entrance into His kingdom.

Matthew 11:28  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

His invitation is for those who are heavy laden from their cares and labors. As I write this, the nations of the world are agonizing on how to deal with Iran and the prospect of them developing a nuclear bomb in the near future. Iran claims that Israel should be wiped off the face of the map and I have no doubt they will attempt to do so (Ezek 38). We are seeing the “distress of nations with perplexity” that Jesus foretold (Luke 21:25). One does not rest too well if they think much of these things.

Many are in deep despair,  have lost jobs, homes and savings ,with no real relief in sight. Surely they don’t rest very well, either. Neither is there any rest for those who have refused to obey the gospel.  But there is rest my friend when we accept the invitation of Jesus and lay all of our cares at His feet (I Pet. 5:7). We can have peace in the midst of the fiercest storm, when we surrender everything to Him (Mk. 4:39).

Matthew 11:29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Jesus is inviting us to do a yoke exchange. We can give Him our heavy yoke of bondage in exchange for one that is light and easy. When we take His yoke, we enroll in His school and are taught by Him. Our only access to God is through Him. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life (Jn. 14:6). When we sit at His feet we learn the way to eternal life. When we consider His teachings we are introduced to His eternal truths that never change. When we submit to Him and consider His life, our life is transformed after His image (Col. 3:10).

Friend, the Master sees and knows your worries and frustrations.  He knows the times that you’ve tried under your own strength and failed. His call is going forth to you just now. Won’t you give it all to Him today?

John 7:37 ¶  In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38  He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

II Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Somebody Has Said
"When we preach Christ crucified, we have no reason to stammer, or stutter, or hesitate, or apologize; there is nothing in the gospel of which we have any cause to be ashamed." (C.H. Spurgeon)
