Conforming to the Image of Christ

Isaiah 11:1 ¶  And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

Isaiah uttered this prophesy of Christ Jesus about 700 years before He was born as a child in Bethlehem.  David’s kingly line was dead in man‘s eyes, but not in the eyes of God.  A new King would arrive on the scene. The angels called His name Jesus, which means “Jehovah has become our salvation.”

King Jesus would be different than all others who had previously sat on David’s throne.  God had sworn with an oath to David that He Himself would set on David’s throne in the person of one of his descendants.
(Ps. 132.11; Acts 2:30; Isa. 9:6-7).

Other Davidic kings had been harsh and cruel, but King Jesus would come as a servant.  He would be totally filled with the Spirit of God (John 3:34; John 14:10). As the Servant of the Lord, Jesus would exercise righteous judgment to all people (Isa. 42:1; Mt. 12:18). Isaiah said that He would be exalted, extolled and very high.  Yes Jesus is highly exalted.  He sits at the right hand of power on the throne of God, having all power of heaven and earth (Ps. 2:6, 110.1; ). He has been given the name that above every name (Ex. 3:15) not only in this world, but in that which is to come . He is above all spiritual powers, might and dominion. (Eph. 1:20-23). All the fullness of the godhead dwells in Him bodily
Col. 1:19, 2:9).

It is at the name of Jesus , which Isaiah said would be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isa. 9:6), that every creature in heaven, hell, or on earth will confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father (Php. 2:9-11).

Yes, Jesus is the King and Lord of Glory (Ps. 24:7-10; I Cor. 2:8; Ja. 2:1) , but in His earthly person , He walked on the earth as a slave (Php. 2:7) .  He said that he had come to do the will of His Father (Heb. 10:7-9). He came to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10).

The Spirit of the Lord rested upon Jesus and He demonstrated all of the attributes of Almighty God.  He had the  spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, and the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD (Isa. 11:2). Because He walked in the fear of the Lord, the human man Jesus had quick understanding in the things of the Lord. He didn’t judge on appearances nor did He judge the offender based on gossip (Isa. 11:3). Jesus always judged with righteousness and compassion. He didn’t condemn the woman at the well or the woman taken in adultery, neither did He ignore their sin. Rather, He by the power of the Spirit, spoke words of life, “Neither  do I condemn thee, go and sin no more.“ He walked on earth as the compassionate and forgiving Christ, but when He returns again, It will be to judge the world and destroy the wicked as He exercises the vengeance  of God (Isa. 11:4-5, II Thes. 1:8). Needless to say, now is the time to take advantage of His mercy (Heb. 12:25).

Isaiah 42:1-4 gives us a picture of the gentile suffering servant. He would not be flamboyant and unnecessarily call attention to Himself. He wouldn’t be found shouting in the streets. When He found the broken sinner, He spoke words in season to the weary, as directed by the Spirit of God (Isa. 50:4). People marveled at the gracious words that came from His mouth and noted that there had never been a man on earth who spoke like Him (Luke 4:22, 21:5; John 7:46).

As long as a spark of spiritual life remained in a person, Jesus would do nothing to hinder him/her. He wouldn’t break a bruised reed or quench a smoking flax.  Jesus said that whoever came to Him need not worry about being rejected. He said that He would in no wise cast them out. (Jn. 6:37). His cry to the sinner still echos down through the years, “ Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Mt. 11:28-30).

Because of our new birth, we are a new creation in Christ Jesus. Old things  have passed away and all things have become new (II Cor. 5:17). God has given us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Jesus . As the Spirit enlightens our understanding, we appreciate the hope of His calling and the inheritance that awaits us (Eph. 1:17-18). Jesus has manifested Himself to us and we are partakers of His  wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption
(I Cor. 1:30).

Christ has been formed in us  (Rom. 8:29; Gal. 4:19 ) and we now bear His image (I Cor. 15:49) and His anointing (Luke 4:18). When people see us they should see Jesus. The words that come from our mouths should be gracious words of life. We don’t waste time on the philosophies of this world but are ever ready to give an answer for the hope that is within us (I Peter 3:15). We walk in this world as shinning lights, sons of God,  who are blameless and harmless as we hold forth the word of life (Php. 2:15-16).

We are ambassadors of Christ on this earth (II Cor. 5:20). As such, we don’t speak our own words, but His words (John 3:34). Our words and our actions must always represent the heart of Christ Jesus . We walk with bowels of mercy and  kindness, with a humble, meek and longsuffering spirit, just as Jesus did (Col. 3:12-17). Jesus was anointed to preach good tidings to the meek.

He bound up the wounds of the broken hearted and proclaimed liberty to the captives. He opened the doors of the  prison to those who were bound (Isa. 61:1; Luke 4:18). Everywhere that He went, He walked in the power of the Spirit.  He only did good and He rebuked the devil anyplace that He was manifested (Acts 10:38).

As John said, “we have an unction from the Holy One, and we can’t keep quiet (I John 2:20). As the Spirit gives us understanding and utterance, let us strive to live, speak and manifest the life of Jesus at all times.

II Corinthians  4:10  Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord  Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.

Somebody Has Said

I am a creature of a day. I am a spirit come from God, and returning to God. I want to know one thing: the way to heaven. God himself has condescended to teach me the way. He has written it down in a book. Oh, give me that book! At any price give me the book of God. Let me be a man of one book.--John Wesley
