They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. Paraphrasing Isaiah 40, we find the promise that the eternal Almighty God would visit His people and become their Comforter and their Savior.

John the Baptist is mentioned prophetically as the Forerunner of the Lord, as the voice of one crying in the wilderness, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord. Prepare a highway for our God."

This chapter was largely addressed to those who felt that their deceitful ways were hidden from the Lord. They were puffed up with pride and had established their own righteousness. This would change when Messiah Jesus came. He would  come and make the  crooked places straight. The mountains of self exaltation would be  be abased and the low folks would be will be exalted. All creation would see the glory of the Lord revealed and there would be earthly comparison to His glory.  Well, this was all fulfilled  in the Lord Jesus Christ when our God entered this world as a babe in Bethlehem. There will also be a future fulfillment when the Lord Jesus comes again to be glorified in His saints. At this time He will take vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (II Thessalonians 1:7-10).

Zion and Jerusalem are instructed to get up to the high mountain and loudly and bravely proclaim to the cities of Judah, "Behold your God"  (See Behold Your God  http://about-him.com/page02.html ). He will come with strong hand, and his arm will rule for him: his reward is with him, and his work before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

The high and mighty are then probed by God with a few searching questions which are good for us to reflect on today.

Who measured the waters in the hollow of his hand?
Who meted out heaven with the span of His hand?
Who comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure?
Who weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
Who directed the Spirit of the LORD?
Who was His  counsellor and teacher?
Who taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?

Well it wasn’t me or you, nor was it  the movers and shakers of the world. He did it all by Himself. He said the nations were as a drop in a bucket and are counted as the dust in a balance. All the nations, and that includes the US are before Him as nothing, they are counted before Him as less than nothing and vanity.

To whom then will we liken God? Is their any comparison in this world? No there isn’t.

He asks the question:

Isaiah 40:21  Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22  It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:
23  That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.

We are told to look at the stars of the heavens and take notice of what our Creator accomplished by the power of His word.

Why then Jacob and Israel (and us) why do we say that our ways are hidden from the Lord. Why do we insist on doing our own thing? Why do we feel that we are immune from God’s judgment?

Have we not known? Have we not heard? That the Everlasting ,eternal, God, the Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth never faints and He’s never weary. There is no searching or comprehending of His understanding. He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. Even the young people will become weary and fail.

However, and this is a big  However:

Isaiah 40:31  But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Oh what a promise for us to take hold of.

In Luke we read of Simeon, who no doubt was well aware of this scripture. He was waiting for the Lord. He was waiting for the salvation of Israel. As He held the baby Jesus he cried out. "Lord let me depart in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared for all people - a light for the gentiles and the glory of my people Israel." Simeon was rejoicing because He was seeing Immanuel, God with us (Isaiah 7:14). He possibly reflected on Isaiah 9:6 and realized that because he had waited patiently for the Lord’s salvation, He had the privilege of embracing eternal God wrapped in human flesh.

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Well, we are in a different age, but we still wait upon the Lord. We wait for a move of His Spirit and look expecting His return. Though we get weak and weary, we can rest in His promises and know that His word never fails. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us ( Philippians 4:13).

Humor
I went to the cinema the other day and in the front row was an old man and with him was his dog. It was a sad funny kind of film, you know the type. In the sad part, the dog cried his eyes out, and in the funny part, the dog laughed its head off. This happened all the way through the film. After the film had ended, I decided to go and speak to the man.

"That's the most amazing thing I've seen," I said. "That dog really seemed to enjoy the film."

The man turned to me and said, "Yeah, it is. He hated the book."
