Satan Has Desired To Sift You As Wheat

Luke 22:31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired [to have] you, that he may sift [you] as wheat:

The earthly ministry of Jesus was coming to an end. Gethsemane and the judgment hall lay just ahead. Calvary was imminent. Jesus had finished the last supper with his disciples. They were steeped in carnality. Jesus was about to go to the cross and they were arguing  among themselves as to who would be the greatest in the coming kingdom.  I suspect that Simon Peter, being of an aggressive nature, was the most vocal of those who were arguing. Jesus singled him out and addressed him directly by name. “Satan has desired to have you that he may sift you as wheat.”

We certainly know the history of Satan:

He caused the fall of Adam and Eve in the garden.
He received permission from God to try Job and he wrecked havoc with him.
He was present to resist Joshua the high priest when he ministered before the angel of the Lord.
He severely tempted the Lord Jesus and it is his job to resist and tempt us.

We are well aware of his attributes:

He was a murderer from the beginning
He is a liar
There is no truth in him
He is our adversary and he seeks to destroy each and every one of us.
We are not ignorant of his devices (II Cor. 2:11).

1Peter 5:8 ¶ Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

John 8:44 Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Jesus continued, “But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not...”  Isn’t it a comfort that we don’t fight the battle alone. Jesus is in our corner.

Luke 22:32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

Jesus  prayed for all believers in His High Priestly prayer of John 17.

ohn 17:20 ¶  Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

Jesus  prayed that:

We would be glorified in Him and keep the words that He had given us.
We would be kept through the eternal name of God that had been given to Him.
We would not be taken out of the world but kept through all of the world’s evil.
We who are not a part of the world would be sanctified by God’s truth.
That as we go forth into the world proclaiming the gospel we would be one with Him and His Father.
That His joy would be fulfilled in us.
That we might be with Him where He is and that we would behold His glory.

That’s quite a list. Jesus, the living and eternal Word of God, knew each and everyone of us before He ever said, “Let there be light.” He saw us as overcoming believers. He saw each and every one of us as part of that innumerable host of redeemed saints singing before His throne. He remembered us, all of us, when He prayed this great High Priestly prayer. If we consider and appreciate this prayer, how can we go wrong?

Furthermore, Jesus, in His High Priestly role,  still prays and intercedes for us, even now.

Romans 8:34 Who [is] he that condemneth? [It is] Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

If we are thankful that Jesus remembers and intercedes for us, we need to consider the example of the Apostle Paul who made intercession and supplication for all saints.

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

I sometimes get aggravated at some around me who seem to be forever opposing themselves. That is until I remember the intercession of Jesus and consider the prayers of others on my behalf. When I see Satan trying to destroy those around me, I have the the obligation and the privilege to call their names before the throne of God.

I can pray for each one along the same lines that Jesus prayed for me.

That they would keep His words and be kept through His eternal name.
That they would be sanctified by God’s truth and kept from the evil of this world.
That they would be in unity with the body of Christ as they proclaim the gospel of the kingdom.
That the joy of the Lord would consume them that they might behold the joy of the Lord.

That’s a big order isn’t it?
