Choose You This Day Whom You Will Serve

Joshua 24:15 ¶ And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

As Joshua was approaching death, he called an assembly of all Israel and relayed to them the words of the Lord. The Lord reminded them how His hand had been upon them from the time that He had first called Abraham, through the years of captivity in Egypt and the early conquest of Canaan.

Their fathers had died in the desert because of disobedience, but this generation was reaping great benefits because of the Lord’s blessings. Strong nations had been defeated at the hand of the Lord. Israel would be inheriting cities that they did not build and vineyards that they had not planted. They had peace from all the nations around them.

Joshua 24:13 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour , and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.

There were still some among them who clung to the idol gods of the surrounding nations.

Joshua 24:14 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.

After the words of the Lord concluded, Joshua spoke up and said in effect, “It’s time to get off of the fence and make a choice.” Whom are you going to serve? Will it be the Lord or will it be the dumb idols that have been among you ever since the days of captivity in Egypt?

Joshua then declared that as far as he was concerned, he and his house would serve the Lord. Israel did serve the Lord the rest of the days of Joshua and those judges who outlived him.

I see many parallels between Israel of Joshua’s day and the modern day Pentecostal church? We have been recipients of God’s blessings, blessing that we have not earned or deserve.

The early church was birthed in turmoil. People gave their lives because they had preached the gospel and refused to denounce the Name of the One who had died for them on Calvary.

It was only 400 or so years ago that men were put to death for daring to translate the word of God. Now most of us own many bibles, including many several translations. During the Pentecostal outpouring at the beginning of the 20th century, folks faced heavy persecution for daring to preach the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Now, most denominations have folks among them who are unashamed to confirm that God baptized them with His Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues.

So where does that leave us today? Well, first of all we have assimilated with the world around us to a degree that our fathers could not have imagined. John Wesley rode on horseback to preach to multitudes in farm fields. Early Pentecostal pioneers preached in brush arbors because they were unwelcome in mainline churches. Conditions were harsh, but oh how they enjoyed the presence of the Lord. Well, now our churches have moved uptown from farm fields and storefronts. We now have acquired large real estate holdings. Nobody has to strain their voice to be heard by a crowd in a farm field. We have the latest in sound technology and our professional musicians give us music that rivals Nashville. We are so programmed that it is no problem to cram a worship service and a sermon into an hour and a half service. The old fashioned altar of repentance has been replaced by “Raise your hand and repeat the sinner’s prayer after me.”

It’s time for us to make a choice. Whom are we going to serve? This choice is not a one time thing. We have to make it daily. What am I gong to watch on TV? What books or what movies will I allow to influence me? How much will I allow the world to influence my thinking? How much time will I give today to reading God’s word? How much time for prayer and meditation? Etc.etc.etc.

Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him]; Hebrews 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more [shall not] we [escape], if we turn away from him that [speaketh] from heaven:
Will we say with Joshua, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord?

Somebody Has Said
"A world of nice people, content in their own niceness, looking no further, turned away from God, would be just as desperately in need of salvation as a miserable world---and might be even more difficult to save." - C.S. Lewis
